Who Are These Characters in the Witcher Netflix Series? Everything You Need to Know

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Whenever a new fantasy show makes its way to Netflix, there is always going to be a bit of worry regarding getting into its lore, world, and the characters that make it all up. For many, The Witcher is exactly that, as it introduces a lot of new rules and elements unique to the world that are familiar to its inhabitants, but not those of us watching at home.

With that said, having a brief rundown of the characters that make up the show’s make cast is certainly going to be helpful when it comes to understanding what is going on.

Here is everything you need to know about the characters that make up The Witcher Netflix series.

Geralt of Rivia

A man that goes by many names, and the main character of the series, Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher belonging to the school of the Wolf.

No matter what school a Witcher belongs to, their sole job is to rid the world of the monsters and demons that were brought about by the Conjunction of Spheres. Geralt is no different.

Like each other member of his dwindling kind, Geralt didn’t choose this life though but was instead offered up as a child to the Witchers. As he grew, he was subjected to alchemic and mutagenic trials that enhanced his abilities, but also dulled his emotions.

Despite this, Geralt has shown that he is more than capable of showing love, empathy, and even anger.

Yennefer of Vengerberg

To say that Yennefer of Vengerberg had a rough childhood is quite the understatement. Born with a congenital hunchback, she was treated with detested by her own father, who hated her elven blood and deformities.

Yennefer’s father despised her so much that he eventually sold her to a sorceresses, Tissaia de Vries, for four marks.

While under her care, Yennefer eventually developed her magic talents, becoming one of the greatest sorceresses in the world, even curing her own deformities.

Now, after over a century of life, she hunts to find the one thing that she gave up: the ability to have a child.

Julian “Jaskier” Pankratz

In a world plagued by war and monsters, there are few bright spots to be found in the world of The Witcher. Bards, however, can spin any ball of yarn into a beautiful tale though; and none more so than Jaskier.

Wielding only a lute, prose for poetry, and an insatiable need for courting woman, Julian “Jaskier” Pankratz explores the Continent, regaling anyone who listens with the tales of The White Wolf, AKA Geralt of Rivia.

While he can certainly be annoying, his companionship with Geralt makes for a great dichotomy whenever the two happen to run into each other.

Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon (Ciri)

Born the sole princess of Cintra, following her mother’s death, Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon is the Child of Destiny. She comes from a bloodline that is known as Elder Blood.

Those who possess the Elder Blood have the possibility to wield amazing power. While these have yet to be determined to the fullest extent, this includes a scream so powerful it can crack the Earth and create vortexes.

While Ciri does grow up in the care of her grandmother, Queen Calanthe, she is actually promised to Geralt of Rivia via an old custom known as the Law of Surprise.

She will likely have the most important role of all in The Witcher as things unfold.

Triss Merigold

the witcher

As one of the rising sorceresses of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Triss Merigold could become one of the powerful people in all of the Continent. The most interesting part is that she seems to have far more compassion than most in the group.

Whether working alongside Geralt of Rivia or in collaboration with Yennefer of Vengerberg, Merigold is shown to be both caring and brave.

Not only does she stand up for Geralt to a King, but she also risks her life for commoners in order to protect them, using her magic to produce shrooms that fend off enemies.

Season two of The Witcher is sure to flesh her out even more, hopefully expanding on traits she has in both the books and the games.

Tissaia de Vries

The rectoress of Aretuza and a leader of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, Tissaia de Vries is as relentless and forceful as they come in regards to teachers.

Her job is to find sorceresses that exhibit magical prowess and use them to benefit Aretuza and the Brotherhood. And she uses them however she can, taking full advantage of every last drop of magic to suite what she believes is in the world’s best interests.

As such, she is responsible for sculpting just about all of the most successful sorceresses that grace the Continent, as they advise Kings and solve worldly problems and affairs.

Despite her tough ways, Tissaia is also shown to have a nurturing side as well, especially when it comes to Yennefer of Vengerberg.

Roach (The Horse)

the witcher

Arguably the most important character in the series, Roach is Geralt’s most trusted confidant. Whether it is for traveling or merely good conversation, this horse is the Witcher’s best friend.

In all seriousness, Roach is the name that Geralt gives to whatever horse he currently owns. While he has owned males, he prefers to have mares (females).

Even though it may seem like he does this to avoid getting attached to the horses, there isn’t an exact reason know as to why he does this.

It is clear that Geralt cares for his horses, as he can be seen calming them and talking to them rather often.
