Overwatch, Moira

Unlike Quick Play and the traditional Competitive mode, you’re all on your own in the Overwatch Competitive Deathmatch. You’ll have to rely solely on your strengths since no one is going to cover your back. As such, it’s always worth considering which hero you’ll pick. Generally, you should try to go with someone well-rounded, such as Soldier 76 who has some solid attacks and even a self-heal ability.

If you’re more confident with your aiming skills, you can try picking Widowmaker or Hanzo who both have amazing range and mobility. And if you lack the mechanical skill, there’s no shame in picking heroes such as Brigitte or Moira. These two heroes have been in the Deathmatch meta because of their self-healing abilities and low skill floor.

It’s also important to consider the map size in Competitive Deathmatch. While most of these areas feature tight hallways and enclosed spaces, the newly-added Petra map is quite spacious. If you’re fighting in, say, Chateau Guillard, characters such as Moira and Junkrat can easily pressure opponents moving through hallways.

Look For the Health Packs

Unless you’re playing with someone who can self-heal, you won’t have any healer to back you up in Overwatch Competitive Deathmatch. The only way you can top up your health is if you find a health pack. Each map does contain a handful of healing containers tucked away somewhere, so it’s always important to make a mental note whenever you find one. You can also use this map knowledge to bait your opponents into fighting near it. If your health dips too low, you can head towards the nearest health pack and heal yourself before finishing off your weakened enemy.

Pick Your Enemies

Let’s face it, you’re more than likely going to be paired against Overwatch players who are above your skill level. Overwatch matchmaking isn’t perfect and there’s only so much Blizzard can do to keep these fights as fair as possible. On top of that, there are plenty of 1v1 fights going around during the Competitive Deathmatch. So when you’re off trying to chase after that Tracer, make sure she’s a player you can actually kill.

Some players will often make the mistake of fighting someone they can’t beat, which just feeds the enemy’s score. Keep track of who’s in the lead and don’t get swept up in the heat of the fight, despite how tempting it is to get a kill. Know when you’re cornered and turn back if you really need to. And most importantly, know which players you can kill and keep tabs of them on the battlefield.

Steal Those Kills

One particularly easy way to rack up your points is by kill stealing. While this is seen as taboo when playing in a team, Competitive Deathmatch is the best place to let loose and play dirty. It doesn’t matter if you whittled your opponent’s health down to 1 HP, the point still goes to the player who lands the final strike.

When you see two or three people duking it out, stay put and watch the action unfold from the shadows. Once someone’s down to critical health, that’s when you can swoop in, land a few clean shots, and hop right out. Either that, or you can try sniping weakened opponents from a distance. Sombra is a great hero for this method since she can conceal herself through stealth and detect weakened enemies with her passive ability.

Watch Your Surroundings

While this may sound obvious, you should watch where you’re going. Each Overwatch map has their own quirks, including pitfalls. If you somehow manage to kill yourself through your own attack or by falling off a cliff, one point will be deducted from your score. Widowmakers should be especially careful when grappling around Chateau Guillard because some of the roofs will lead straight into the water. Take in your surroundings and learn which areas are safe to pass through when making a quick getaway. The same idea also goes for respawning since you’ll never know if there’s an enemy waiting just around the corner. Make sure to always do a quick sweep of the area before moving on.
