Resident Evil Village: How to Get Lockpicks & When to Use Them

Resident Evil Village is a Resident Evil game through and through, carrying over gameplay mechanics and elements seen in other entries. However, some of them have been tweaked to better balance the game, making it feel more like your decisions matter in terms of how to use them. Such is the case with lockpicks, and that’s why we’re here to break down how to get lockpicks in Resident Evil Village and when best to use them.

Oh, and don’t worry about potential spoilers. We’ve left the guide absent of anything that might spoil the story or new areas for you.

How to Get Lockpicks and When to Use Them in Resident Evil Village

Like in RE7, lockpicks are a single-use item in Resident Evil Village. You’ll only be able to pick one lock with them before they break.

On top of this, they’ll be few and far between, with only a few scattered around each area. In particular, they’ll be located in rooms found after the more challenging sections of each area, either due to combat or tricky puzzles. To top things off, there will be multiple locked containers and cabinets per area, and you aren’t likely to have enough to unlock them all unless you’ve been hoarding the rare tool type.

This makes it paramount that you think carefully before using one of these valuable objects. Unlocking one locked container could bar you out of unlocking another later, and you may never know what you missed out on if you can’t find another lockpick.

Or at least, that’s what Resident Evil Village wants you to believe.

When You Should Use Lockpicks

In truth, there’s a limited pool of items you’ll find in cabinets or containers that require lockpicks. You can find some ammo, a healing item, or some treasure to sell to the Duke for Lei. None of these are bad by any means, but they’re also not something you’ll sorely miss if you don’t grab them.

As such, you can use lockpicks as you see fit, based on when you need these resources. You won’t be missing out on anything game-changing, and you won’t miss out on much by choosing one locked container over another.

Hopefully, this cleared up how to get lockpicks and when to use them in Resident Evil Village. For more on the game, check out our guide wiki. It has plenty of other guides that’ll help you make the most of the latest entry in the acclaimed survival horror series.
