Getting an Umbrella in Animal Crossing New Horizons
There are a variety of different items and tools you can make use of in Animal Crossing New Horizons, and you can craft them anytime you want as long as you have the DIY Recipe for it. The Leaf Umbrella is one of them, and you can get it fairly early on in the game.
After progressing through the tutorial of the game and starting your first official day on the island, you can talk to Canberra, who will then give you your very first DIY Recipe for the Leaf Umbrella. After that, all you need to do is head over to the workbench and get to crafting.
If you don’t already have a workbench of your own, you can go to the Resident Services tent and make use of Tom’s workbench there. Before that, check your inventory and select the DIY Recipe with the A button to learn it, then interact with the workbench to craft it.
From the workbench menu, choose the Leaf Umbrella and press the A button to craft it. You’ll need 15 clumps of weed to craft it, and these can be gotten very easily just by picking up the weeds and grass on the island with the Y button.
Once you’ve crafted it, the Umbrella will be placed in your inventory. Open your inventory with the X button, select with the A button, and you can equip it like any other tool.
