Pokemon Sword & Shield: Are There Mega Evolutions? Answered

Mega Evolutions added a new wrinkle into the decades-old Pokemon battle system that let many different, less viable creatures enter the fray. Pokemon Sword & Shield keeps with changing up the battle system and has great new form designs.

That’s the other aspect that made these evolutions so exciting. Sure, your pals would become ridiculously strong, but they also got fantastic new designs. That’s great, but did Mega Evolutions make it into Sword & Shield?

Are There Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Sword & Shield?

If you’ve been paying attention to the press surrounding the release of Pokemon Sword & Shield, then you probably already know this answer. If not, then I have some bad news for you.

You’re not going to be able to use Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Sword & Shield. Instead, Dynamax and Gigantamax have taken the place of the old transformations.

The way you initiate a Dynamax or Gigantamax is similar to that old evolution mechanic, but it doesn’t rely on your Pokemon holding a special stone. That means there are also no Gengarites to find this time around.

Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing only last for three turns, but like Mega Evolutions, you can only do them one time per battle. It helps make this new feature a bit more balanced than its predecessor.

While these new transformations also give us fresh Pokemon designs much like those evolutions did, these new forms aren’t quite the same. But, they at least carry over some of the old mechanics.

That’s everything there is to know about if Mega Evolutions are in Pokemon Sword & Shield. If you need any help with the new games, then just check out our Sword & Shield Guide Wiki.
