Fortnite Squad Formation: How to Make 16 Player Lobbies

Ever since its initial release back in 2017, Fortnite’s party system has always been limited to just four players. It’s been frustrating for large groups of friends who want to enjoy one of the large-scale limited time modes together. Thankfully, Fortnite Squad Formation has arrived, enabling players to make up to 16-player lobbies. Here’s everything you need to know about this new feature.

What Is Squad Formation in Fortnite?

First things first, it’s important to get an idea of exactly what Squad Formation is in Fortnite. Simply put, this new feature which is available from the lobby screen enables groups of up to 16 players to all hop into a single lobby and join a game of any game mode that supports more than four-player squads. We’ve broken down all of these eligible modes down below for you.

While you’ll all still be broken up into smaller four-player squads, it does mean that none of your friends have to miss out on playing within the same game as the rest of you.

How to Make 16 Player Lobbies in Fortnite?

To make use of the Squad Formation feature in Fortnite, simply make your way to the lobby screen. Begin inviting up to 15 of your friends and they’ll all begin to join the lobby. You’ll then see the ‘Squad Formation’ option at the bottom of the screen assigned to a button or a key. This is LT/ L2/ ZL on consoles, and you can just select it with your mouse on PC.

By selecting this, you should see something similar to the screenshot we’ve included above. Obviously, your own online ID and those of your friends will fill the various slots. You’ll only open up Crab Squad once five players are in your lobby, Bear Squad with nine players, and Dragon Squad at thirteen players. Llama Squad is the name for your standard four-player squad.

How to Change Squads in Fortnite Squad Formation

In order to change which squad you find yourself in, all you need to do is open up the Squad Formation screen above and select the team you want to switch over to. As long as you’ve got some free slots you and your friends can freely move about between the various teams.

What Modes Can You Use Squad Formation With?

Essentially, any game mode in Fortnite that has squads or teams with more than four players will allow you to use the Squad Formation feature. We’ve listed the currently active game modes and LTMs within Fortnite that allow you to use this new feature down below, and have also provided further examples of other past game modes that would also allow players to use Squad Formation too, just as an example.

  • Infinity Gauntlet
  • Food Fight
  • Disco Domination
