Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer Unveils The Movie Debut of Mysterio

Spider-Man: Homecoming wowed audiences two years ago, and Marvel Studios is poised to make lightning strike twice with another Spider-Man movie.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home (I see what you did there, Marvel) starts off slowly. Peter Parker, once again portrayed by Tom Holland, is touring Europe with his friends and spider suit, but he quickly gets roped into two typical Marvel Universe problems, one of which involves Nick Fury. The other is Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Now, anyone who’s watched a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie knows everything about Nick Fury. The man, portrayed by the ever-brilliant Samuel L. Jackson, is as synonymous with the Marvel movie franchise as Stan Lee (R.I.P.) is with Marvel itself. Fury is a man who needs no introductions, but the question remains: what does he want with Peter Parker? Maybe it has something to do with Mysterio.

Even though the trailer paints Mysterio as a Doctor Strange-esque character (complete with green bolts of mystical energy) longtime Spider-Man fans know Mysterio is and always has been a villain. The man basically an evil Harry Houdini who robs banks with stage magic and high-tech gadgets.

Not that I’m complaining about Mysterio’s appearance in the movie; far from it. He’s doing what stage magicians do best. Instead of performing mundane crime sprees, he’s using a stage magician’s innate talent for misdirection, tricking people into thinking he’s a good guy by fighting elemental golems he probably created.

Of course, I’m just going off what I know of Mysterio from the Spider-Man comics and cartoons. Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe is its own separate entity, this incarnation of Mysterio might very well be a bonafide hero and practitioner of the mystic arts. While that remains to be seen, his appearance in a movie has been a long time coming, especially since he would have appeared in Spider-Man 4, had Sam Raimi continued the series, portrayed by none other than Bruce Campbell.

While we don’t know when Spider-Man: Far From Home will hit theaters, it is “coming soon,” complete with an IMAX version, so stick around for any and all news regarding the movie.
