Rockstar Games’ hotly anticipated sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 is just around the corner, and it promises to be something truly special. It’s another wild western adventure, but this time on an even grander scale and packing a level of detail and immersion to looks set to move the entire open world genre forward. As you’d expect, though, there are several different versions of the game available both digitally and at retail, so let’s break them down and discuss everything you need to know.

Pre-order Bonuses

Before we take a look at the versions themselves, it’s worth noting that customers who pre-order any version of the game will receive pre-two order bonuses: the War Horse and the Outlaw Survival Kit. The War Horse is an iron-grey-colored mount which has better stamina than a regular horse. As for the Outlaw Survival Kit, it contains a collection of supplies that add to dead-eye skills, replenishes health, and more.

In addition to those additional items, PS4 & Xbox One pre-orders will receive in-game cash. This can be used to purchase weapons, food, ammunition, and and other gear. If you purchased the pre-order before Aug. 15 you’ll receive a Treasure Map. This will lead players to buried treasure in the form of yet more goodies to boost your early game.

In a neat tie-in the Grand Theft Auto V, for those that own both games on their hardware a $500,000 Maze Bank infusion with be added to your account. If you’ve opted for the Special and Ultimate Editions (we’ll detail those later), you’ll get a whopping $1 million or $2 million.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Versions/Editions

The Standard Edition: $59.99

This edition is the base version of the game only. It comes with no additional content.

Special Edition: $79.99

In addition to the base game, the Special Edition includes exclusive content for the Story Mode. There are two unique missions: Bank Robbery Mission and Gang Hideout. Elsewhere, you’ll have access to a special mount called the Dappled Black Thoroughbred, which is faster and has better endurance than a normal starting horse.

It also comes with two additional bonuses called Talisman and Medallion, which enhance perception and allows Arthur to endure more damage on horseback.

There are other gameplay boosts, discounts, and unique outfits you’ll get too. Notably, unique weapons in the form of the Volcanic Pistol, Pump Action Shotgun, and Lancaster Varmint Rifle.

Ultimate Edition: $99.99

The Ultimate Edition has everything in the Special Edition but also two bonus outfits for your online character, the Blackrose Bounty Hunter and the Copperhead Enforcer Outfit. There’s a special mount called the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred. You’ll also have free access to the Survivor Camp Theme, and you can accelerate your rank with bonuses that can push you to rank 25.

Collector’s Box: $99.99 (Exclusively at Gamestop)

It’s important to note that this *does not include the base game*. The Collector’s Box is a metal box that comes with a lock and key. Inside, there are several trinkets, which includes:

  • Collectible Challenge Coin
  • Double Sided Puzzle, Six Shooter Bandana
  • Treasure Map
  • Pin Set
  • Playing Cards
  • Wheeler
  • Rawson and Co. Catalogue
  • 12 Cigarette Cards
