Rouge-like games put a premium on variety to keep every new run interesting, and Risk of Rain certainly has enough items, relics, and weapons that it feels fresh even after dozens of hours. In addition to tangible loot, there are plenty of special characters to choose from, too. 11, to be specific. They’re unlocked by completing different achievements throughout Risk of Rain, some of which are pretty difficult. Here, we’re breaking down how to unlock all characters in Risk of Rain to give you a handy reference.
Enforcer – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Kill the Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus.”
You can unlock Enforcer even if you die, so don’t worry about knocking out these enemies in a single run. You can also do it on any stage you like, but it must be Rainstorm or higher.
Bandit – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Beat the 3rd stage.
Pretty self-explanatory, this one. Just note that you need to complete it on Drizzle difficulty or higher.
Huntress – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Collect 15 Monster Logs.
Simply pick up 15 Monster logs (it doesn’t matter which) while playing any stage on any difficulty Rainstorm or higher. Just remember that higher difficulties tend to drop logs more frequently.
HAN-D – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Find the robot janitor.
You’ll find the robot janitor during Risk of Rain’s self-titled last level. You’ll need to head to the area called ‘Cargo 2.’ You should see an area in which there are several multicolored boxes stacked on top of each other, and in the top-left corner, a grey door that can be activated. Activating this door while playing in Drizzle difficulty or higher will unlock HAN-D. Do note that HAN-D will not spawn in multiplayer.
Engineer – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Purchase 40 drones total.
A fairly obvious one, but just make sure you’re playing on Drizzle or higher. Pro tip: Drones destroyed in combat and then purchased a second time count toward the achievement.
Miner – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Clear a path for the survivor.
This one is a bit tricky because the tunnel in the bottom-right corner of the level Magma Barracks doesn’t always spawn. When it does, walk through it to find a small room with a pod in the top right corner. Don’t worry about getting it, just beat the boss blocking the way —which also doesn’t always spawn (do not activate the teleporter as this will certainly block it from spawning). You’ll need to be playing Drizzle or higher.
Sniper – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Beat the game.
You’ll just need to kill the final boss in Drizzle or higher.
Akrid – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Free the chained creature.
The objective is referring to the Sunken Tombs, underwater level. In the far right corner of the map, you’ll find a metal cage-looking box, which frees Acrid once you interact with it. He’s hostile, but after defeating him you’ll be able to use him as a playable character. Note that Acrid’s cage won’t always spawn, and it’s especially less frequent in multiplayer mode.
Mercenary – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Beat the game Five times.
Simply kill Providence five times to unlock Mercenary. Note that in multiplayer, if you die but your companion soldiers on and defeats him, that still counts towards your tally.
Loader – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Obtain 30 items in one playthrough.
The artifact command is essential here since you can choose your items with each drop. You’ll also struggle to tick this one off in a single run so we’d advise employing Looping.
Note that useable items count toward your target.
CHEF – How to Unlock All Characters in Risk of Rain
Objective: Obtain Meat Nugget, Bustling Fungus, Sprouting Egg, Bitter Root and Foreign Fruit in one run.
Again, the Command artifact makes this unlock super easy. Simply chose the required items as you go.
