Deadly Overwatch Bug Causes Seasonal Bans and Drastic SR Loss

Blizzard is on the case.

Overwatch has had its fair share of quirks in the past, but nothing seems to be as severe as its new bug. A Redditor has reported a major problem in the Competitive Play mode that gives players seasonal bans for no reason. Moreover, the affected player’s skill rating also drops by hundreds of points at once.

This rare bug seems to occur whenever a player leaves a competitive match during a certain point in the loading screen. When this happens, Overwatch goes into a “waiting for players” state and will always fail when trying to find a match. The whole process will continue repeating itself until the player is stuck with the dreaded seasonal ban and severe SR loss.

Luckily, game director Jeff Kaplan has already addressed the issue on the Battle.net forums. “This bug is a high priority for our team, and we’re working on a fix to prevent further instances of it occurring as we speak,” he wrote. Until then, Blizzard will be removing the seasonal ban and adjust the SR for all affected accounts. There have been a little fewer than 200 affected players so far, and the Overwatch team will continue to monitor the situation.

“We don’t have an ETA to share right now for when the fix will go live,” Kaplan continued, “but we’ll update this thread as soon more information becomes available.” Needless to say, fans should be a little more careful when leaving their competitive matches.

In other news, Blizzard is planning to release another comic starring Zarya and Sombra. They’ve already shared a short teaser and plan to release the full comic this Sept. 27. Overwatch is now available to play on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
