Harry Flynn Double Cross – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Video games are filled with twists and surprises, it’s how they work to keep players invested. But sometimes the twists waiting for us at the end of the path are as clear as day and the only ones left surprised are the characters in the story. We’ll be taking a look at some of the most obvious twists that everyone saw coming. There will be quite a few spoilers in here.
Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series is filled with twists and cliched plot devices, but they always work in the lighthearted, swashbuckling adventure style of the games. However, they could have made the twist at the start of the second installment in the series slightly less obvious.
In the opening scene, Harry Flynn, Nathan Drake’s old friend, alongside Chloe Fraser, offers him the chance to steal a Mongolian oil lamp that will supposedly lead them to the sunken fleet of Marco Polo. With the lamp, they can get their hands on a map that will lead them to more treasure than they could ever wish for. As soon as they’ve found it in the highly guarded mansion, Flynn betrays Drake and leaves him stranded in the room with a broken lamp at his feet and security on their way. It’s a classic betrayal but Flynn’s creepy, untrustworthy manner makes it clear from a mile off. However, it isn’t the only twist in the Uncharted games that might as well be signposted by flashing lights and a twist warning…
Sully Is Actually Alive! – Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
In the early chapters of Drake’s Fortune, the first Uncharted game, Sully and Nate leave Elena and go in search of El Dorado, the lost city of gold. Sully is in some serious debt and owes some scary people money so was counting on the rewards from their hunt. They follow the trail to a German U-Boat, Nathan goes to explore the inside of it while Sully stays on the shore. When Drake returns, the player finds that Sully has let Gabriel Roman, the guy he owes money, know about the hunt as a kind of promise that the money will be coming soon. Roman takes the map from Drake and shoots Sully in the chest. The expectation is that Sully has been killed, but isn’t the case.
Drake finds out that he is alive when Elena captures footage of him getting into a helicopter with Roman and Navarro. He pretends to help the bad guys so that he can stay alive and look for the treasure himself, with the hope of being rescued. Having played such as huge role in the early moments of the game, Sully was never going to be actually dead.
Celeste is the Bad Guy – Mirror’s Edge
In Mirror’s Edge, as she continues her fight against the bad guys in the bright yet empty world, Faith is confronted by a female assassin who possesses the same style, agility, and parkour abilities as her. Faith’s best friend, Celeste, also possesses those abilities and is supposedly the only other runner in the game’s world.
Later on in the game, once you know both of them, you find out that the assassin is actually Celeste. However, the lack of characters in the game signposts it early on. Since Celeste is the only runner you come across in the majority of the game, it isn’t a stretch to think that the assassin could be her. The initially un-named assassin moves in the same way and has the same physical attributes as Celeste so you may see the connection very early.
Young Bayonetta – Bayonetta
Platinum Games’ Bayonetta released in the West in early 2010 and sees you play as the titular character, a witch who is capable of shapeshifting, using a range of weapons, and using magical attacks. During the game you rescue a small girl named Cereza from an angel attack. The girl repeatedly addresses Bayonetta as “mummy” and is a natural when it comes to the use of magic.
However, a short while later we’re told that Cereza is actually a young Bayonetta but the way the young girl is introduced makes that come as far less than a surprise. On top of her love of magic, angels flock to her, her hair is the perfect length for weaponization, and she develops a love for lollipops in front of our eyes (something that the grow up Bayonetta also loves). Bayonetta doesn’t come particular bothered by it and she certainly isn’t as confused as you probably will be.
Gehrman Boss Fight – Bloodborne
Throughout Bloodborne, the excellent PlayStation 4 exclusive, Gehrman is in a wheelchair and acts as your guide, telling you what to do at frequent intervals. He is one of the first hunters and uses his wisdom to help you on your journey.
At the end of the game you can end up fighting him because he is one of the possible final bosses. He is no longer injured or in a wheelchair but instead is wickedly fast and agile, making him one of the toughest bosses in the game. From the way he speaks, gives you tips, and repeatedly makes his presence known, it is quite obvious that he wasn’t as helpless as he seemed. Thankfully, any expectation does not make the boss fight any less thrilling and challenging.
Nicole Is Dead – Dead Space
In Dead Space, the Ishimura is an infested mess and all of Isaac’s crew are dead, apart from Nicole, his love interest in the game. Throughout the story, he receives cryptic messages via the onboard communications network. Towards the end of the game, she shows up in person and the lovers are reunited.
However, Nicole actually committed suicide a few hours before Isaac arrived at the Ishimura. You, as Isaac, are seeing hallucinations of her because you’re mentally unstable. It’s easy to tell that she’s actually dead because she’s unarmed at all times, and constantly calm. Everything feels wrong and the way she acts doesn’t fit with the actions of everyone and everything around her. It also makes sense that Isaac is mentally unstable because everyone one else around him is as well. Why would be be the only one that isn’t suffering.
Wesker Is a Bad Guy – Resident Evil
Albert Wesker was first introduced in the original Resident Evil who was captain of the US police team STARS.He often assists your character and is helpful unplayable character. He’s power-hungry, knowledgeable, and cunning. His aim was to replace the entire human race through mass extinction and forced evolution because he believed that humanity was bad for the world and limited evolution.
As you’d expect, he wasn’t the good guy cop that he is initially introduced as. He was actually part of Umbrella and was an antagonist with some powerful abilities. Throughout, from the way he acts and talks about his views, it is really obvious that he wasn’t going to continue being the good guy.
