Grand Admiral Thrawn is a character that already exists in the Star Wars universe, having been introduced to fans via the 1991 novel, Heir to the Empire.

In Star Wars Rebels, he is being voiced by Lars Mikkelsen, who is clearly having a ton of fun chewing up the scenery as the sinister foe.

The eponymous rebels themselves are clearly struggling to fight against the insurmountable odds of the Empire’s army as a result, with the trailer suggesting a much darker tone than what we’ve come to expect from the show.

The third season of Star Wars Rebels is set to premiere on Disney XD on Saturday the 24th of September, 2016.
