The Tetris Movie Will Be the First Part of a Sci-fi Trilogy

The first of three parts.

Tetris fans, here’s some good (?) news: the upcoming Tetris movie has such a big and unique story that it will be split into three parts, and presented as a sci-fi trilogy. Speaking with Empire, director Larry Kassanoff explains that the story they have conceived “is so big” and that’s why one film won’t be enough. They need three.

‘Is this, as rumours have suggested, designed as the first in a trilogy – or Tetr-ilogy, if you will – of Tetris movies? “That’s correct,” he confirms, “and purely because the story we conceived is so big. This isn’t us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It’s just a big story.”‘

When asked if the movie will feature colorful blocks running across the screen, Kasanoff was quick to dismiss that notion.

‘”We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie,” he tells Empire, “but it’s great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!”’

Kasanoff also explains that the movie will deal with the concept of order being born out of chaos, which, if you really think about it, is actually quite an apt description of the gameplay in Tetris. The movie will be shot mostly in China, and other global locations.
