Once you’re in this menu, simply move the item you want to equip to them over into their inventory with the Store option. Then move onto their side of the trading screen and simply select the equip option which should be mapped to triangle on PS4 and Y on Xbox One.

Exit out of the trading screen, take a step back and admire your newly clad companion or settler. They sure look fly!
