Resident Evil 7 Has Weapons, But Early Game is Largely Hide & Seek

Run, boy, run.

Despite the majority of its trailers showcasing an exploration-oriented experience, Resident Evil 7 will in fact put some weapons at your disposal.

In an interview with GamingBolt, producer Masachika Kawata confirmed that there is an entire arsenal of weapons available in the game, allowing players to defend themselves if needed. The main thing, however, is that they’re not easy to come by.

“You’re going to be pitted up in situations where you’re still going to have to fight. You’re going to get a nice arsenal of weaponry,” Katawa told GamingBolt. “So in that element you’re not going to see too much of a difference. The one thing I do want to point out though is the fact that the weapons aren’t going to be that easy to find. So until you find them and have that advantage you’re probably going to be running around considerably a lot more.”

From the screenshot shown above, it’s clear that some weapons (if not all of them) will be locked inside bird cages, making it the player’s task to find ways to unlock said cages. Seeing how the Resident Evil franchise likes to work with specific keys that only fit their corresponding locks, it’s likely a similar feature will return once more.

What this means is that the earlier hours of the game will likely be spent running and hiding from the horrors that wander the Baker family mansion. Searching for weapons may not be the priority for all players considering the series’ trademark focus on resource management, leaving many in a search for useful tools and green herbs. Ammunition will likely be scarce, too, making it a question of whether you should resort to violence rather than whether you could.

Resident Evil 7 hits shelves come January 24, 2017 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

But wait, there’s more…
