Nioh – Upgrading Weapons and Armor

Recommended Videos

As you get into the higher level missions in Nioh, you’ll pick up more and more gear pieces that will likely have better stats than whatever you have equipped. However, that doesn’t mean that your older gear will be rendered obsolete immediately. In fact, there are a few ways you can modify and upgrade your gear to keep them relevant all throughout the game.

First off, you need to unlock the blacksmith on the world map. If you simply want to increase the defense and damage multipliers of your gear, you’ll want to pick the Soul Match option. Here, you can choose the piece of gear you want to upgrade, and another piece to be infused into the base. By picking a high level gear for infusion, your base piece’s multiplier will increase, but do note that the Familiarity meter will be reset.

If you want to change the rolls and bonuses on a piece of equipment, choose the Reforge option at the blacksmith. If you have enough money and resources, you can re-roll any perks you don’t like as many times as you want until you get something that suits your build. Ideally, you’ll only want to take your purple gear to the blacksmith as these offer up the best stats and most number of perks. Even if your old purple is severely underpowered to a higher blue piece, upgrade it and it’ll be up to snuff.
