How to Beat Frostclaws Easily in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds

During Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds’ story quests, you’ll be tasked with taking down your fair share of the giant Frostclaws. These machines are basically terrifying bear-like machines capable of wiping out your health bar in a few short seconds. To give you a helping hand, we’ve identified the key weaknesses of Frostclaws and provided some tactics to try next time you find yourself face-to-face with one of these beasts.

Frostclaws have one incredibly handy weakness – their bodies are weak to fire. As such, ensure you’ve got a good supply of fire-based ammo and land as many shots on its body as possible. While we’re on the topic of supplies, we always advise ensuring your Medicine Pouch is filled and you’ve got some other restorative potions stocked up just in case things go wrong. Finally, be sure to keep your distance and always remain on the move to make sure you avoid the powerful melee attacks.

To deal significant damage with just a few shots, you’ll want to locate the Freeze Sac and Freeze Unit with Aloy’s Focus. Now, pelt these with fire arrows to damage even higher burn damage, or use Hardpoint or Precision arrows to pierce them and cause the Frostclaws to freeze. With Frostclaws immobilized, we like to use this time to quickly set up some explosive tripwires and traps to deal some extra damage as it relentlessly charges around after you.

At this point, you’ll want to target the power cell up on the top of its back if you can get a good shot. Hitting this enough will cause it to explode, electrifying anything in the nearby area. This is your next chance to really deal the damage on Frostclaws.

Frostclaws won’t need much more to bring them down. We continued to keep our distance and land a mixture of Fire and Precision arrows to help finish them off.
