The Last of the Undefeated Finally Fall in Overwatch League

Three teams went into week 3 undefeated, and all three are going to leave with an L. Yesterday, Philly took down New York, and Boston took down London. However, the Excelsior certainly bounced back after that loss to the Fusion, and took down the one of the popular pre-season favorites, Seoul Dynasty, 3-2 in overtime to jump into first place in the Overwatch League and hand Seoul its first loss.

After a back and forth contest, New York had a chance to take down Seoul in map four (Junkertown) after a strong defensive effort held Seoul to just one point captured. However, the Dynasty pulled out an even more impressive defense led by Fleta, shutting down the Excelsior completely and not allowing them to take a single point, forcing overtime.

However, overtime on Lijiang Tower was all New York. It took a team effort, but in particular Mano (Roadhog)  JJonak (Zenyatta) and Saebyeolbe (Tracer) all had key kills in pivotal moments to secure a 2-0 sweep in overtime.

The first few weeks of Overwatch League have been entertaining, but lopsided in favor of the top teams, while the bottom teams looked largely noncompetitive. However this week has finally shaken things a bit with middling teams like Philadelphia and Boston getting big wins. New York is a top-tier team and is a squad that is capable of winning it all, so them beating Seoul isn’t a huge shock. Eventually Seoul had to lose, and it might have well been the Excelsior to get the job done. Still though, the Dynasty looked so impressive through the first two weeks, and even losing to New York has to be a disappointment.

The Dynasty, Excelsior, and Spitfire are now all locked in at the top at 5-1. As of right now, the safe bet is that these three teams will still be sitting right where they are when the season ends. With maybe a scrappy Fusion squad capable of upsetting that order.
