Fortnite developer Epic Games’ push for Steam’s market share in the PC digital download area isn’t just developer-facing but also directed to gamers, and the first move of this chess match happened now, with Subnautica being made available for free on the Epic Games Store.
All you have to do to grab the game for yourself is to create an Epic Games account (if you don’t have one already), log in, and find Subnautica in its store page. No credit card info is needed, and you’ll be prompted to download the installer for the Epic Games launcher.
After installing the client, you’ll have to launch it, log in, and find the game to install in the library tab. Sound familiar? It probably is.
The game isn’t just available for PC, but it also runs for Mac if you prefer to play on a computer by Apple.
It’ll certainly be interesting if the rather compelling offering of the Epic Games Store will manage to sway the “No Steam No Buy” crowd towards having multiple digital download clients installed on their PCs. It’s likely that if someone can do that, it’s Epic.
Incidentally, the offer is available until Dec 27. You’re not exactly in a hurry, but you probably shouldn’t sit on it either.
This isn’t the only rather aggressive initiative being launched by Epic, as they’re also tackling cross-platform gaming across all platforms using the know-how they accumulated with Fortnite.
If you’re unfamiliar with Subnautica, it’s a lovely survival game released by Unknown Worlds Entertainment at the beginning of 2018, with PS4 and Xbox One versions just released this month. Here’s a quick recap of those steps to get Subnautica for free if you’re interested.
