The Duff
The Duff, which is based on the novel of the same name by Kody Keplinger, is quite the generic school based teen rom-com. It outlines all the stereotypical different social groups of a US high-school and focuses on one student place in all that.
Mae Whitman’s Bianca isn’t exactly unpopular but she begins to investigate her school’s social ladder once she finds out that she’s known as the DUFF, or Designated Ugly Fat Friend.
Also starring Bella Thorne and Robbie Amell (who plays Bianca’s childhood best friend), The Duff sees Bianca do everything she can, with some help from the cool kids, to change how her peers see her and she gets close to her friends in the process.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
One of the most popular movies that are like The Perfect Date, To All the Boys I Loved Before is as close to a carbon copy as you’re going to get.
Coming just a matter of months before The Perfect Date, it is another Netlifx original teen comedy that also stars Noah Centineo. It has been better received though, largely down to the central plot device and the performance of Lana Condor.
Condor plays Lara Jean, who has been writing passionate love letters to boys she has a crush on all throughout her time at high school. One day, those love letters get out and are spread around school and Lara thinks her life is ruined.
Peter (Centineo) and Lara Jean then join forces to cover for the leaked letters and make his ex-girlfriend jealous in the process. As they come up with and enact their plan, they get closer and closer.
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser
The movie that began the ‘Noah Centineo becomes a Netflix genre of his own’ trend, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser is one of the sweetest teen comedies you’re likely to find.
Sierra Burgess, who is far from the coolest girl at her high school, is mistaken for the someone else and begins to text one of her school’s most handsome boys. She decides not to tell him and they begin to fall for each other.
Sierra then teams up with the cool girl she’s pretending to be in an attempt to solve the situation so that each of them can get the boy they’re after.
The central romance is sweet, the other characters all get their moment in the spotlight, and it is a great portrayal of realistic high school drama. It also completes the Noah Centineo Netflix trilogy. It’s unlikely that it’ll be the last though.
Easy A
Slightly older than the other films on this list, and also the film that shot Emma Stone to fame back in 2010, Easy A is a bit cruder than your traditional teen comedy.
Olive (Stone) is a no-one at her high school, but she sees her life paralleling the story of The Scarlett Letter and after one quick lie about losing her virginity to a college guy, she becomes the attention of everyone at school.
She quickly learns that she’s able to manipulate her peers with lies to change her social standing. After helping other people but alienating her friends, she realizes that being the center of attention isn’t actually something she wants and tries to reverse her fortunes.
Love, Simon
Love, Simon is a little more on the drama side than The Perfect Date. It still features all the trappings of a teen rom-com, such as a central romance and the high school angst, but it’s a lot more about the struggle of Nick Robinson’s Simon.
Throughout his time at school, Simon has been keeping the fact that he’s gay a secret. His family doesn’t know, nor do his friends of teachers.
Not only is someone threatening to out him to the entire school but Simon begins to fall in love with someone he meets online. They go to his school, but he doesn’t know who they are and they’re in a similar situation to him.
The story of Simon attempting to accept himself and open up to those close to him is touching. It may not have the laughs and hijinks of The Perfect Date, but it’s another wonderful movie about a teen struggling with love.
Edge of Seventeen
Probably the best of the movies on this list, Edge of Seventeen stars Hailee Steinfeld, who you’ll know from the Pitch Perfect movies and last year’s Bumblebee. The rest of the cast is phenomenal too, with roles for Woody Harrelson, Haley Lu Richardson, and Blake Jenner.
Steinfeld’s character, Nadine, hates high school. She’s miserable, bored, and wishes to be more popular. Her life gets infinitely worse when her best friend stars dating her older brother, who’s also the popular jock of their school.
With the help of family, new friends, and teachers, Nadine has to learn to accept what’s happening and do everything she can to make her life better before she leaves for college. From Edge of Seventeen alone, it’s clear why Steinfeld has gone on to be one of the best young stars in the acting world.
