Run in a Team
The phrase strength in numbers most certainly applies when playing Gears of War 4’s Versus multiplayer. Whether you’re playing normal Team Deathmatch, or one of the objective-focused game modes such as Escalation or King of the Hill, having at least one person with you will lead to more success.
Having someone by your side simply means that you’re going to overwhelm the majority of players who go off on their own. Two, lots of incoming fire and two targets to aim at makes their life far more difficult and yours a heck of a lot easier. Taking and breaking objectives is faster too. Everything’s better when you’ve got a teammate by your side!
Smart Weapon Choices
Gears of War 4 has a bunch of weapons for you to blast, shock, and explode your enemies with, so make good use of them all. It’s easy enough to stick with your standard preset weapons of the Lancer, Gnasher Shotgun and the Snub Pistol, but branching out and picking up the power weapons on the map will lead to you not only racking up kills, but dominating objectives.
With that being said, it’s also important to be smart in the weapons you’re using for particular scenarios. The shotgun is perfect for close range, the Longshot… not so much. Working out what weapons work best in particular situations and playing to these strengths and weaknesses will see you becoming far more effective on the battlefield.
Learn the Maps
Each map in Gears of War 4 has its secrets and tricks to it, and it’s down to you to learn them to really outperform your opponents. Before a game starts, you’ll be shown a layout of the map which details the location of power weapons as well as the locations of the objectives you’ll need to capture/ break. Use this time to really get an idea of how the map looks, and the quickest routes to get to these significant locations. You can always go the normal way or work it out when you’re in the game, but by that point, you’re likely to have been beaten to it by an opponent.
There are also particular locations on the map which can be particularly handy for using long-range weapons or getting a good vantage point over the chaos. It may seem like an incredibly obvious tip, but it’s one that many players will overlook. If you’ve played an online shooter for significant hours before, you’ll know that the maps you perform best on are the ones you know like the back of your hand. Get this down and you’ll instantly find yourself picking apart your enemies and racking up huge scores.
Focus on Objectives
With all of the gory action that Gears of War 4 brings, it’s easy to get distracted and simply go for kills when playing Versus multiplayer. We don’t blame you, after all shooting things in games is fun. But if you’re playing an objective-based game mode, make sure to keep your focus on the task at hand. It’s perfectly fine to rack up kills while you’re capturing or breaking rings in King of the Hill or Escalation, but don’t just see it as another mode to show off your killing skills.
Not only will you get a much higher score and, in turn, more XP for battling it out over objectives, but you’ll also find your contribution goes a long way helping your team to victory.
Perfect Active Reloading
Active Reloading is nothing new to Gears of War 4, but it does make a huge difference to your performance when playing online if you use it effectively. After a while, you’ll eventually start to nail perfectly active reloading, resulting in your ammo flashing signifying you’re about to dish out the pain, but don’t just wait until your gun needs reloading to take advantage of this.
At the start of the game, if you’re confident in your active reloading abilities, fire off a couple of rounds of your weapon of choice. Then, perfectly active reload to get yourself an instant damage bonus as soon as you head into battle. Utilize the active reload whenever you can, it’ll save your bacon.
Bounty Cards
Though they won’t help improve your game in Versus multiplayer, bounty cards can be incredibly helpful if you’re wanting to level up quickly. These consumable cards, when active, will allow you to earn additional XP or Credits by completing different challenges. For example, this may be kill 10 enemies with an execution, or get 5 assists in a game.
Varying in difficulty and the rewards tied to them, bounty cards are incredibly important to keep in mind when you’re sitting down for a marathon online session. You can also craft additional bounty cards of your favorite ones too, so don’t simply overlook this as an unnecessary addition. They’ll help you progress and purchase more Gear packs far faster.
