Getting Out of the Catacombs in Dark Souls Remastered
The Catacombs is one of the most dangerous newbie traps in Dark Souls Remastered, especially when you consider how easy it is to stumble into this location right from the start of the game. First off, if you’re lucky enough to not have gotten stuck in the Catacombs yet, here’s how you can access this location. From Firelink Shrine, look for the room with the squarish pool of water in the middle. Facing the pool, turn left and go down some steps to find undead skeletons in a graveyard. If you keep going deeper into the graveyard, you’ll eventually find stairs leading down into the Catacombs.
If you know what you’re doing, this can be a good place to get some extra souls and an item that helps with your Estus. But if you’re a new player, we highly recommend waiting till you complete Anor Londo before coming down here. Instead of heading down to the Catacombs from Firelink Shrine, go upwards to the Undead Burg instead. You’ll have a much easier time.
Now, if you did happen to get stuck in the Catacombs, get ready for a bit of a grueling journey back to Firelink Shrine.
Alright, so after beating Pinwheel, look for a ladder in the corner of the room. The ladder is very well-hidden so it might be a bit easy to miss, but just check the corners (it should be directly opposite from where you picked up the mask after the fight) and you’ll have a prompt to climb up. Climb the ladder, and then climb another one. Once you’re on top of the boss arena, you’ll see prism stones leading you to the Tomb of the Giants. Do not head there. Instead, turn around and follow the path backwards until you reach an item and an area you can drop down to. Turn right, and run past the bonewheel skeletons (though it’s safer to take them out slowly) and the floating skull heads.
Go through the hole in the wall after running past the floating skulls, then turn right, and take another right to find a ladder on the wall. Climb up, go through the second hole in the wall, turn right, then check the wall for another ladder. Go through the next hole in the wall, take a left, and run down the long hallway till you’re out in a more open area. Follow the linear path to another crypt, then go up the slope and cross the bridge. Here’s where things get a little tricky. If you did have the foresight to flip the bridge before descending further down into the Catacombs, you can run across and keep following the path back to Firelink Shrine. If you haven’t, well, there’s more to do.
Go back down the sloping path to find a brick wall that’s slightly damaged. You can easily break this wall by swinging your weapon at it. Go through, and then drop to the area below. Go up the stairs, take the first right through the hole in the wall, then immediately take another right to go up some more stairs. Keep following the linear path until you reach another room, then check the wall on your right for a ladder you can climb. At the top of the ladder, turn around and go to the far end of the room to find another hole in the ground you can drop through. Head left, go up the sloping path into another crypt, and then take an immediate right to find a hole in the wall with a bonfire. This is the very first bonfire you should have found in the Catacombs. After resting at the bonfire, just keep following the path and climb the ladder in the next room. You can the sprint up the spiraling stairs past the skeletons to head back above ground.
YouTuber Abyssen has also uploaded a video that shows how to get out of Tomb of the Giants (if you headed that far in), which should help if you’re trying to leave the area without the Lordvessel.
