Picking heroes to complement your teammates’ picks is as important as knowing how to play that hero effectively.

Call of Duty: WWII

Sledgehammer Games brings us back from space and drops us in the Pacific Northwest for an old school boots on the ground Call of Duty experience. World War II offers a more traditional Call of Duty experience by going back to its roots. All of the Call of Duty staples are still there, character progression, weapon skins, and an assortment of game modes and maps. Being the best-selling game every year, Call of Duty never drastically changes the formula, but offers the solid gun play popularized from the Modern Warfare days. Sledgehammer provides constant updates and in-game events for players to participate in, to keep the game feeling fresh.

Since its launch in November, Call of Duty has already hosted two large events that brought in new character customization options, and brand new weapons for players to enjoy. With a large player base, it is easy to find matches quickly and play with friends. Sledgehammer even created a social space for players to hang out in together and pick up challenges. This space has secrets to discover, a firing range to test out new weapons, and NPCs to interact with. Rainbow Six, ps plus, april 2017, free games

Rainbow Six Siege had a rocky launch, due to performance issues, server troubles, and a general lack of content, however that is no longer the case. Ubisoft stuck with Rainbow Six Siege, and helped grow it into a widely successful example of the ‘games as a service’ model. Going on its third year of DLC and game updates, Rainbow Six Siege now stands with the best of them. In this 4v4 tactical shooter, players are either on the attacking or defending team, trying to eliminate the opposing squad.

Through DLC, there are 16 maps and six different game modes for players to enjoy. Modes like Hostage where a team defends a group of hostages from the other team who are there to break the walls down and escort the hostages to safety, offer intense moments in buildings with multiple floors and tactical entry points. Then there’s Terrorist Hunt, a co-op mode that allows players to team up to take down a bunch of computer-controlled enemies. Classes come in the form of different operators, currently in game there are 36 different operators, but developers have stated they would like Rainbow Six Siege to have between 50-100 by the end. Hibana’s versatility with her explosive pellets allow for players to make one giant breach, or a few smaller ones, while Ash is effective at getting in and out before the enemy team even knows what hit them. The cast of operators in Rainbow Six Siege are the star of the show, with varied and balanced abilities. With 36 operators and 77 weapons, Rainbow Six Siege offers nearly endless combinations for players to explore and check out.

The Battlefield series went back even further in time in 2016 all the way to World War I. It showcases the brutality of World War I with 64-player battles of epic proportions, but really drives that concept home in the campaign. Battlefield 1 follows the stories of multiple characters throughout World War 1 throughout vignettes. It shows the more intimate sides of its characters with small squads trying to make their impact on the war, and get out alive. In one case you’re a squad trying to escort a tank to provide reinforcements for pinned down allies, while in other scenarios you’re simply trying to stand your ground. The brutality of war is shown by humanizing the player characters.

Battlefield’s combat and map design is top notch, and gives players a real sense of how intense war can be. Resident Evil 7

re engine

Back from what was presumed dead, Resident Evil 7 took the franchise in a whole new direction, first person. Taking the horror you love from the Resident Evil franchise and presenting it in a first-person perspective was a game changer for this 2017 title, not to mention its ability to be played entirely in PlayStation VR. Exploring the Baker estate is a truly horrifying and grotesque series of events as Resident Evil 7 unfolds.

With a strong cast of characters, and true survival horror gameplay, Resident Evil 7 brings the franchise back to its survival horror roots, which it strayed away from in RE 6. The action is still there in RE 7, but ammo is scarce and being conservative with it is the key to surviving this game. Knowing what enemies to shoot, and what enemies to run away from can be the difference between getting out alive, or death. Any horror, FPS, or Resident Evil fan should play Resident Evil 7 for a truly terrifying time.
