Battleborn: How to Beat Rendain

Rendain is the powerful Jennerit leader that has been giving the Battleborn hell. His dreams of ruling the universe lead him to stop at nothing when it comes to war. Destroying planets is a hobby, and mocking you the entire way through comes as second nature to this warrior.

With all of the boss fights in Battleborn’s story, Rendain’s easily proves to be the most difficult whether you’re alone or with a team. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible. All you need is to know what to expect and how to manage the battelfield.

The fight with Rendain takes place in an arena made up of all of the planets he has destroyed over the years. There are jump pads that allow you to move between each area to both avoid big attacks and go on the offensive. Although the designs of each side are very different, no single one gives any particular advantage. Just use them to create distance when needed, or to chase down large targets.

There is a very strong minion presence during this battle, as well. Unlike other boss battles where they seem to appear every now and then, there is a constant flow of Jennerit and Varelsi enemies. They can prove to be annoying if you let too many of the larger versions roam about. Go after those, as the smaller ones you can deal with whenever they get too close for comfort.

One thing to keep in mind throughout this final battle is to never stop moving. Rendain will try to lock you down so he can kill you, so keep out of reach when you’re not jumping in for some powerful attacks.

Now, let’s get into the specifics.

Stage One

When the battle first begins, you’ll have a chance to face Rendain one-on-one. This is where you’ll learn all of his moves and get a feel for how to use the large arena to your advantage.

Rendain is a vicious melee fighter, much like Rath (who used to serve under Rendain). He has one ranged ability, though, which is what makes this fight challenging. He will summon these metallic dragons that seek you out and form a sort of steal cage while also dealing damage, stunning you, and removing your ability to use skills. Even worse, if it catches you mid-air, you’ll drop like a rock and get to watch your life counter drop down a notch.

Whenever you’re still for long enough, he will use a leap attack to close the distance. This is your opportunity to put the pain on him if you’re using a melee character. If you’re using someone ranged, you should never stop shooting him whenever you’re not bouncing around.

One thing to be aware of when fighting him one-on-one is the fact that his attacks have some serious knockback. If you’re standing in an open area with no wall anywhere behind you, Rendain can, and will, knock you off of the stage. While it’s easy to not die from damage, losing your last life simply because you fell can be very disheartening.

Once you get the boss down to around 50% health the fight will change and you’ll have to deal with Phase Two. 

Phase Two

Rendain will grow tired of you, so instead of continuing the one-on-one bout, he will start to summon huge enemies for you to take down. You should recognize them, as they’re three of the bosses faced throughout Battleborn’s Story. Don’t worry, though, they require the same mechanics but go down much quicker than when you faced them before.

Jailer Hylis

Jailer Hylis is the easiest of Rendain’s summons to defeat. He relies on ranged attacks, but doesn’t give to much of a chase if you stay on the high points of one of the outer islands of the arena. Before you can damage him you must take out his guards as they generate an impenetrable shield for him. Once they’re down he’s easy pickings until they reappear. Rinse and repeat.

 Varelsi Conservator

Powerful, and a bit frightening. The Conservator is relatively easy to take down, just aim for the face (the white spot in the sea of black). When she summons her guard they will help her generate a huge void blast. Killing them instantly cancels this attack, so when they appear divert all attention to them. Other than that, just attack as you normally would.

Bagranth the Gunhulk

Easily the most annoying of the bosses in all of Battleborn. Bagranth has a shield that can only be taken down by specific turrets whose nodes appear once he’s summoned. Unlike other turrets in the game, these are very easily destroyed by even the smallest enemies. They cost 300 Shards each to activate, so run around killing enemies and blowing up Shard clusters to power them up. Two at a time is fine, just keep them safe until his shield goes down. When his shield goes down you have a short window to do damage. He will often teleport so keep an eye on your mini-map. When Bagranth is down to about 20% health he will no longer generate the shield and become extra aggressive. Finish him off.

Once all three are defeated, it’s time for the final phase. 

Final Phase

After dealing with all of those nasty summons, it’s time to face Rendain face-to-face once more. This time, he has no issue with using all of his minions to help put you down. You’ll be bombarded with fire from all sides, while still dealing with Rendain trying to knock you off of the world.

But don’t panic. Even with all of the extra firepower coming your way, and the hectic nature of fighting the game’s toughest boss, you should use the same tactics employed in Phase One. Keep a steady stream of fire on him while making sure to change location constantly. Always make sure there is a wall somewhere behind you in case you get knocked back, and punish him when he comes in close. Playing safe is of the utmost importance, and in time you’ll watch him fall.
