Here’s How Much Money Each Marvel (MCU) Movie Has Made (Avengers, Iron Man, Spider-Man, & More)

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Avengers: Endgame is breaking all box office records. We’re now 22 movies into the MCU series and some of the movies have made an insane amount of money. Here’s how much money each Marvel movie has made so far.

22.The Incredible Hulk

The second film in the MCU series, many fans’ least favorite, and the lowest earning, is The Incredible Hulk. Starring Edward Norton as the titular hero, rather than Mark Ruffalo, it’s no surprise that a lot of people don’t even realise that it’s an official MCU title.

$263,427,551 – Worldwide

$134,806,913 – Domestic

All figures correct as of Box Office Mojo on May 3.

21. Captain America: The First Avenger

The first time we saw Chris Evans appear as Cap was back in 2011 and while it didn’t blow the world away, it proved successful as his second film went on to make nearly double the amount at the box office.

$370,569,774 – Worldwide

$176,654,505 – Domestic

20. Thor

Thor’s solo outings have generally been a little underwhelming when compared to his appearances in ensemble films, both in terms of quality and box office takings.

$449,326,618 – Worldwide

$181,030,624 – Domestic

19. Ant Man

The appeal of an Ant-Man movie wasn’t quite what it was for those starring more well known heroes, but the little guy has become a staple of the MCU. Making more than Thor worldwide but less in the US, it proved to be more appealing to foreign audiences than many expected.

$519,311,965 – Worldwide

$180,202,163 – Domestic

18. Iron Man

Releasing just over 11 years ago, Iron Man was the movie that started it all. Robert Downey Jr. was clearly born to play Tony Stark and the series grabbed people immediately. That was especially true for US audiences, as it took more than 50% of its total gross domestically, which is unusual to say the least.

$585,174,222 – Worldwide

$318,412,101 – Domestic

17. Ant Man & The Wasp

Compared to other recent MCU movies, Ant Man & The Wasp performed poorly. He’s clearly one of the least favorite heroes. That being said, it would have made significantly more than its budget and he’s a key part of the Avengers movies.

$622,674,139 – Worldwide

$216,648,740 – Domestic

16. Iron Man 2

Iron Man proved that the first had been a success worldwide as, while it made less in the US alone, it made nearly 50 million more in all territories, balancing out the ratio a little.

$623,933,331 – Worldwide

$312,433,331 – Domestic

15. Thor: The Dark World

Thor’s second solo outing, while not the best received in the series, still proved to be successful as it made nearly $200 million more than the first.

$644,571,402 – Worldwide

$206,362,140 – Domestic

14. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange was another lesser known character to get their own movie. The movie’s quality and the star power of Benedict Cumberbatch helped it make a lot of money though, and the inevitable sequel will likely make even more.

$677,718,395 – Worldwide

$232,641,920 – Domestic

13. Captain America: Winter Soldier

Making about twice the amount that The First Avenger did at the box office, Captain America: Winter Soldier was the point at which the MCU ramped up and it was clear that audiences really loved Cap and his supporting cast.

$714,264,267 – Worldwide

$259,766,572 – Domestic

12. Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy was quite a departure for the MCU franchise, with a sillier, more lighthearted tone. That resonated with audiences though, as it made even more than the first two Captain America movies, and most of the other debuts.

$773,328,629 – Worldwide

$333,176,600 – Domestic

11. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok was a departure from what people expected from Thor’s movies. Directed by the excellent Taika Waititi, it was colorful and hilarious and introduced the comedic side of the character we now know. It also made nearly $200 million more than Thor 2.

$853,977,126 – Worldwide

$315,058,289 – Domestic

10. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2

The success of the first film meant that Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 was always going to be a success – everyone now loved these characters. It went on to make just shy of $100 million less than the first.

$863,756,051 – Worldwide

$389,813,101 – Domestic

9. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Under Sony’s control, Spider-Man had seen a couple of reboots and had generally been disappointing. Excitement was high when it was announced that he’d be joining the MCU movies and Spider-Man: Homecoming was a nailed on hit. To date, it’s the third highest grossing debut for one of the series’ heroes.

$880,166,924 – Worldwide

$334,201,140 – Domestic

8. Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel final total is pretty surprising and it is the first movie on this lift to break $1 billion worldwide. Possibly the most powerful hero in the series, the fact that it came between Infinity War and Endgame might be part of why it did so well, on top of it being a great film in its own right.

$1,112,189,450 – Worldwide

$415,368,399 – Domestic

7. Captain America: Civil War

Coming after Avengers and Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War was vital in setting up Phase 3 of the MCU movies. Tony and Cap’s spat was important to the overarching story, it was the first time we saw Tom Holland’s Spidey, and it’s essentially an extra Avengers movie, so it’s no surprise that it did so well at the box office.

$1,153,304,495 – Worldwide

$408,084,349 – Domestic

6. Iron Man 3

Iron Man 3 is where the series really hit its stride. RDJ’s Stark was a character a lot of people cared about by this point and 3 is many fans’ high point of the mini-series. Still, over $1.2 billion worldwide is really impressive.

$1,214,811,252 – Worldwide

$409,013,994 – Domestic

5. Black Panther

The highest grossing non-Avengers movie in the MCU, Black Panther captured hearts more than any other standalone film in the series. While it’s worldwide figure is incredible, it’s the domestic figure that stands out, taking more in the US than any other movie on the list, even those above it. It’s now the third highest grossing movie in the US, only surpassed by Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

$1,346,913,161 – Worldwide

$700,059,566 – Domestic

4. Avenger: Age of Ultron

$1,405,403,694 – Worldwide

$459,005,868 – Domestic

3. Marvel’s The Avengers

Until a year or so ago, the first Avengers movie was the top of this list. Not only was it the first movie to pass $1.5 billion, it was the first time that we saw the whole gang fight together.

$1,518,812,988 – Worldwide

$623,357,910 – Domestic

2. Avengers: Endgame (As of May 3, 2019)

The most recent movie and the end of the main saga, Avengers: Endgame has raced to the no.2 spot in just one week in theatres. Its domestic total isn’t that impressive just yet, but the worldwide figure is huge. By the time it’s off screen, it’ll likely be no.1 on this list and the box office all time list too.

$1,764,251,786 – Worldwide

$452,351,786 – Domestic

1. Avengers: Infinity War

Its place here might be under threat but Avengers: Infinity War is the number one highest grossing movie in the MCU series for now. Not only did it set up Endgame beautifully but it’s great on its own, thanks in large part to Thanos, and it is the only movie so far to break the $2 billion barrier.

$2,048,359,754 – Worldwide

$678,815,482 – Domestic
