5 Overwatch Characters That Make the Most Sense for Smash Bros. Ultimate

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

In a recent interview with IGN, Overwatch Director, Jeff Kaplan, stated that he would allow Nintendo to use any one of their characters to use in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Although there are plenty of new characters coming to Overwatch all the time, there are only a few that would make a great Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter.

With that being said, here are 5 Overwatch characters that should guest star in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Tracer

Tracer is the most iconic Hero in Overwatch. Not only is she on the box art for the game, but she has become a favorite amongst Overwatch fans for her progressive backstory and unique abilities that are unlike anyone else.

Speaking of her one-of-a-kind abilities, this is what makes Tracer a perfect candidate to make the leap into Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Due to Smash being played on a 2D plane, Tracer’s Blink ability would make a seamless transition into Smash Bros. Ultimate. Being able to phase past her opponents would give her strong evasive abilities that would allow her to stand up against the best of them.

However, there are some abilities that may be a little more difficult to balance.

Tracer’s Recall ability may need to be altered if she made the jump to Smash Bros. Ultimate.

If you thought Kirby was cheap, imagine how annoying it would be to knock Tracer off the map, only for her to continuously recall back to the stage and never die.

Simply adding a cooldown or limitation to this ability would easily eliminate the issue and ensure that Tracer is not overpowered if she makes the jump and becomes a Smash Bros. Ultimate character.

Pharah

Pharah, the rocket blasting, sky soaring Hero in Overwatch would be a fantastic addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cast.

If you have ever played Overwatch before, you know that Pharah is often floating high above the action, raining rockets down on her enemies below.

What makes Pharah an easy Hero to transition to Smash is her Hover Jet ability. Pharah’s escapability would allow her to play similar to characters like Kirby, who are able to float back to the stage after getting knocked off.

Pharah’s missiles could also act in a similar manner to characters like Samus, who already resembles Pharah in a myriad of ways.

Finally, her Concussive Blast ability makes for a perfect way to smash enemies off of the stage.

In Overwatch, the Concussive Blast ability is already known for knocking enemies off the stage, so bringing it to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a simple transition that can easily be foreseen.

Roadhog

Roadhog is the giant hog-like Hero that is known for pulling enemies in with his giant Chain Hook to deal damage up close with his shotguns.

Although some characters in Smash Bros. have an ability similar to this such as Link and his Boomerang, Roadhog would come to the game with the longest reaching hook ability that Smash Bros. has ever seen.

Imagine being able to jump off the edge of the map, only to hook someone on your way down and bring them with you. There are plenty of characters in Smash that have ways to trap people into death, and Roadhog would be a great character for that type of nuance.

Speaking of knocking others off the map, Roadhog’s Whole Hog Ultimate would be a perfect ability to do just that. In Overwatch, the massive rail gun that Roadhog pulls out once his Ultimate hits 100% has some of the strongest push abilities in the game.

Although Nintendo would need to ensure that the Whole Hog ultimate couldn’t be used all the time, adding a cooldown or meter system to the ability would make it more balanced and it would make a proper transition to Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Doomfist

Doomfist was introduced as the 25th Hero, being the fourth character added into Overwatch post-launch.

He is known for his up close and personal attacks and giant gold gauntlet that allows him to uppercut, dash, and plow through enemies at a moment’s notice.

His brawling fighting style is what makes Doomfist a perfect candidate to make the transition into Smash.

In fact, many characters in Smash already have abilities that resemble the abilities that Doomfist carries in Overwatch.

Characters like Little Mac and Ganondorf possess the ability to dash across the map, dealing massive damage in the process.

When Doomfist originally launched, he was likened to being a fighting game character in a shooter, so making the jump into an actual fighting game would be practically seamless.

Doomfist’s Rocket Punch and Uppercut make for an easy combo that players can perform on their enemies, much like the combos that characters like Ryu and Ken possess in Smash.

The fact that Doomfist is modeled after fighting game characters already, becoming a Smash Bros. Ultimate guest character is almost a no-brainer.

Reinhardt

reinhardt

Reinhardt is one of the most popular Tanks of choice when it comes to Overwatch. His giant shield allows teammates a safe space to hide behind as they deal damage to the opposing team.

What makes Reinhardt a great Hero to bring into Smash Bros. Ultimate is not just his giant shield, but his massive Rocket Hammer that he uses to dish massive damage to his nearby opponents.

With Smash Bros. Ultimate being a fighting game, most of the combat takes place in close quarters, and Reinhardt is a master at CQC.

Another easily transitional ability into Smash Bros. Ultimate is his shield, Barrier Field. For anyone that has played Smash, you know that every character that blocks has a bubble shield that appears and breaks over time.

In Overwatch, Reinhardt’s shield acts in a very similar manner, making it easy to bring into the game.

Finally, Reinhardt’s Ultimate, Earthshatter, would make for an explosive ability in Smash Bros. Ultimate, especially in games that contain more than one opponent.

Being able to stun all enemies in the vicinity of Earthshatter would allow Reinhardt to rack up massive damage and take a few stocks in the process.

While there are plenty of Overwatch characters that would make great additions to the cast, these are only a few of the ones we feel would make an easy transition to become a Smash Bros. Ultimate guest character.
