BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

Best PS4 Games in June 2018

Arc System Works has a wealth of experience with fighting games, as the creators of Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, and most recently Dragon Ball FighterZ. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is a bit different from the rest, however, as it combines characters from four different series into one. Three different Arc System Work’s games come together with BlazBlue, Under Night In-Birth, and Persona 4 Arena. Meanwhile, Rooster Teeth’s original animation RWBY comes into the mix with Ruby Rose, Weiss, Blake, and Yang.

For fans of fighting games this is a huge crossover, and the diverse cast changes up gameplay from the previous installments of all of these series. Cross Tag Battle uses a 2vs2 battle system that lets you tag in characters and use them for assists, similar to Marvel vs. Capcom. There are elements from the three other fighting game series, but Cross Tag Battle still uses unique systems for a new experience. While the game has run into some controversy for its DLC plan, with 20 characters available in the base game and 20 as DLC, it’s still an ambitious crossover that any fighting game fan should keep an eye on.

Vampyr

Best PS4 Games in June 2018

Vampyr

Vampyr is a big deviation from Dontnod’s previous games, the likes of Life is Strange and Remember Me. However, it’s a game with a fascinating setting that could easily be one of the sleeper hits of the year. Vampyr is set in 1918 London during the outbreak of the Spanish flu pandemic. You play as Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor who’s turned into a vampire and discovers a shocking supernatural world.

The game’s mechanics play right into the idea of being a vampire, and you even have the ability to turn other inhabitants into vampires. London serves as a semi-open world with four interlinking areas, and a wealth of people and creatures to get to know, and kill. Jonathan has to take down different targets in the game, getting to know their daily routines and habits, while collecting clues and investigating the larger mystery of the game. There’s a ton of choice involved in Vampyr, with every choice you make directly shaping the outcome of the story. You can even make it through the game without killing any of the major NPCs, though it’ll severely limit your experience to use on abilities, which is mostly gained through blood.

Vampyr seems like a an intruiging cross-over between story/adventure games and action-RPGs, and if its ambitions really pay off it could be one to nab this month.

Jurassic World Evolution

Best PS4 Games in June 2018

Ever since the first Jurassic Park, the idea of building your very own dinosaur theme park in a video game has been tantalizing. The idea has been done to varying degrees of success, but Jurassic World Evolution provides a brand new opportunity, one that coincides with the release of a new film as well.

Evolution is a new business management sim from Frontier Developments, the studio responsible for the RollerCoaster Tycoon series and more recently Planet Coaster. The game is set on the fictional islands of the Las Cinco Muertes Archipelago, with your goal being to establish five-star parks on all five different islands. You’ll need to construct enclosures for the dinosaurs, different facilities, theme park rides, and more. On top of that, you’ll have to contend with a variety of threats and issues that pop up, from dinosaur breakouts to unpredictable weather. Jurassic World Evolution comes from developers experienced with the management sim genre, and it certainly looks stunning. Hopefully, this can be one of those games that properly captures the idea of managing your own dinosaur park.

New Gundam Breaker

Best PS4 Games in June 2018

Gundam is one of the longest-running anime series out there, and recent years have seen more of a focus on Gunpla themselves. The Gundam Build-fighters sub-series created a fun anime focused around building and battling Gunpla, and now New Gundam Breaker brings a similar experience onto the PS4. It’s been years since we’ve seen a Gundam Breaker game in the west, and this one promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

The basic concept of Gundam Breaker has you constructing your own Gunpla on a frame, mixing and matching parts from different mobile suits across the franchise. New Gundam Breaker will let you swap parts out on the fly during combat, which has a focus on 3vs3 battles. Like most Gundam games there’ll be a wide selection of parts and suits from the various series, with everything from Reconguista in G to Char’s Counterattack represented. There’s even an original story, that apparently will feature some degree of dating mechanics. It’s one for anime fans to watch out for.

The Crew 2

Best PS4 Games in June 2018

The Crew 2, Ubisoft

The first The Crew was praised for its massive, persistent open world, but technical issues marred a bit of the experience. Ubisoft hopes to improve upon everything with The Crew 2, providing players with more options than ever before. The game sports a scaled-down recreation of the entire United States, letting players traverse it in a number of vehicles like cars, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes.

Like the first game, there’s a huge emphasis on multiplayer in The Crew 2, and there are four different hub worlds with different playstyles including off-road, street racing, pro racing, and freestyle. The big addition to the second game is that you can switch between vehicles on the fly, instantly going from driving a car to a plane, or boat. This allows for some ridiculous tricks and situations, with a lot of variation. If The Crew 2 can manage to avoid the technical issues the first game had, it could end up being one of the standout racing titles of the year.
