The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Teaser Lives up to Its Name

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

We are currently in the middle of a retro-themed renaissance where showrunners bring back classic and beloved shows for a new generation. While many of these titles are aimed at children, others go for the gut of an adult-oriented, mature and almost grimdark setting. Judging by the trailer for the upcoming Sabrina the Teenage Witch show, titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, audiences will get something solidly in the latter category.

The trailer for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starts off with a fittingly chilling rendition of the classic Happy Birthday song that plays throughout the trailer. The presentation is reminiscent of the Dead Space trailer that featured a spine-chilling version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which is a plus since that game and its marketing were amazing.

The trailer for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina implies, thanks in part to the video description, the show will closely follow the source material comic of the same name and star Sabrina (played by Kieman Shipka) as she approaches her 16th birthday. As she is only half witch, she will need to decide between two distinctly different kinds of lives: that of a mortal and that of a witch. One will include high school romance and drama, and the other will involve spellcraft and broomstick rides. It’s a tough choice, since Sabrina essentially has to choose between staying with her loving boyfriend Harvey (portrayed by Ross Lynch) or permanently joining her aunts Hilda and Zelda Spellman (played by Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto, respectively) and their talking cat familiar Salem.

Furthermore, the trailer features some Baphomet-looking dude —who might actually be Satan himself. However, we don’t know his role just yet. He could be Sabrina’s ally since Baphomet is synonymous with witchcraft (and Satanism), but then again, he could easily play the part of antagonist since, you know, he’s a demon.

The tone of the trailer indicates The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be a far cry from both the original Sabrina comics and the comedic sitcom that starred Melissa Joan Hart. The clips featured in the trailer accentuate The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s dark nature, as most if not all of the outdoor shots feature some fog. It’s not quite as thick or choking as the fog in Silent Hill, but it still makes the show’s town look like it’s caught in the clutches of an ever-looming supernatural power.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to release on Netflix just in time for Halloween on October 26th.
