5 Ways Kingdom Hearts 3 Can Get Bigger & Better with DLC

1. More Worlds

One of the most exciting aspects of the Kingdom Hearts series for both diehards and casuals alike is the series’ use of Disney properties to make up its lineup of worlds. In each game, Sora and the gang (or some other Kingdom Hearts character) get to visit a handful of Disney worlds.

In past games, these worlds’ stories were simply retellings of the movie they were based on, with the Square Enix side of things added in. In Kingdom Hearts 3, though, some of the Disney worlds get wholly original stories.

This is exciting for a number of reasons, but for the purpose of this piece it means that Square Enix isn’t tied down to the scripts of Disney movies. They can create their own stories in these Disney worlds.

Additional worlds is probably the type of DLC highest on most fans’ wish lists and there are plenty of Disney properties, both classic and new, that haven’t even been mentioned in this series.

The Aristocats, A Bug’s Life, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, The Jungle Book, The Incredibles to name a few of the older movies. On the newer side of things, Moana and Coco would be especially aesthetically and narratively pleasing.

2. Additional Keyblades

Just as Disney worlds are exciting in the Kingdom Hearts series, so too are the keyblades, and largely for the same reason. The keyblades obtained after completing a world are always exciting, for two reasons.

First, they always change up the play style you adopt based on their stats. And secondly, they are designed to look like an object from that world.

If we get additional Disney worlds, we should also get keyblades from completing those worlds. Can you imagine a keyblade based on The Incredibles.

“Honey, where’s my super-keyblade?”

Okay, that doesn’t work as well, but you get the idea.

Furthermore, Square Enix could also design some additional original keyblades, or keyblades not based on Disney properties. Some of the best keyblades in the franchise aren’t tied to Disney worlds and it’d be great to see more of these make their way to the game.

3. Extra Costumes

In Kingdom Hearts 2, we saw the protagonists, Sora, Donald and Goofy adapt to their environment with unique outfits. Rather than just walking around The Caribbean with zippers and large shoes galore, Sora outfitted himself to look like a pirate and the series has been better off ever since.

These changing costumes make a return in Kingdom Hearts 3 and we want customization.

There is already an in-game economy and Moogle Shops where you can purchase things like potions and ethers. Why not have different outfit options available for purchase in the Moogle Shop of each world?

For example, in The Caribbean in Kingdom Hearts 3, why not allow Sora to have the standard pirate costume, a Jack Sparrow-inspired one, a Davy Jones outfit or even a Captain Hook callback one?

This would add some extra eye candy to an already uniquely beautiful game that would keep fans engrossed.

4. Boss Rush Mode

For better or worse, likely depending on how well your perform against them, Kingdom Hearts is a series filled to the brim with boss fights. If you remember the final world of Kingdom Hearts 2, you know that that last world is basically boss, after boss, after boss, after boss.

Some of these bosses are terribly forgettable (particularly that weird ribbon spring heartless in Kingdom Heart’s Alice in Wonderland level), but some of the boss fights are exhilarating and challenging (any Vanitas fight ever).

With a Boss Rush mode, players would not only be able to experience these fights over and over again to their (Kingdom) hearts’ content, it would also serve as a way for players to sharpen their keyblade skills.

If a Boss Rush mode was added in as DLC, Square Enix could even toss in some trophies or achievements tied to certain fights or exclusive keyblades that can only be earned after doing this challenge or that challenge during this or that fight.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep already had something similar in the Mirage Arena, and with some tweaks here and there, a Mirage Boss Rush Arena could work wonders for the Kingdom Hearts 3 endgame.

5. New Game Plus

Who doesn’t want to relive their Kingdom Hearts 3 memories over and over again?

Sure, there is a camera mode in the game now for the first time ever, which will certainly let you do that, but that yields nothing more than a static shot.

For someone who wants to replay parts or all of Kingdom Hearts 3 again, their only option is to load up a previous save (which means anything they unlocked after this point will be null and void until they unlock it again) or restart from the beginning.

A New Game Plus mode would allow players who have finished the game to jump right back in without the worry of unlocking again things they’ve already unlocked.

It would also allow players to experience the game once more with more challenging enemies (although a proud or critical run through will certainly do the trick too), which is why so many people enjoy modes like this in the first place.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance had a New Game Plus mode of sorts, but it didn’t allow you to star the game over with everything you had already earned — just some of the things.

Follow this same formula, but give players access to everything and allow them to pick and choose what they want, and you’ve got a perfect DLC that’s sure to keep players around.
