Popular Novel Console Wars is Getting a TV Series Adaptation

If you haven’t read console wars, you probably should — although it soon won’t be the only way to experience Blake J. Harris’ superb story of SEGA’s overthrow of Nintendo as the king of console hardware in the 1990s. Legendary Entertainment today announced that the popular novel is getting a TV series adaptation.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, whose resume includes Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid live-action film teams up with Mike Rosolio (American Vandal, Sean Saves the World) to write the pilot episode.

Seth Rogan, who wrote the forward for Console Wars, will serve as an executive producer alongside Evan Goldberg and James Weaver.

Harris’ Console Wars follows businessman Tom Kalinski as he transitions from a successful tenure at Mattel Toy Company to CEO of SEGA America. Kalinske was responsible for SEGA’s aggressive brand expansion, which completely reshaped the balance of power in the video game industry.

Through clever marketing, the nurturing of franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog, and the shrewd acquisition of third-party IPs such as Mortal Kombat, SEGA almost toppled Nintendo during a time in which they’d previously held a complete monopoly. It’s an iconic showdown that gave birth to Sonic and Mario’s rivalry, as well as the modern console space as we know it today.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect the TV series to air. Notably, Rogen and Goldberg had previously mentioned a film adaptation of the book back in 2014, and there was some discussion of a TV documentary in the same year, too. Perhaps the projects have since been merged? More on that soon, no doubt.
