Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Development on Hold, Disney Still Searching for New Director

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Development of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been officially put on hold, via The Hollywood Reporter.  Production of Vol. 3 was set to begin in the early months of 2019, but the small crew currently in pre-production were informed that they were “free to look for new work”. This comes after the news that James Gunn will not be reinstated as the director of the third Guardians movie, due to his controversial tweets from almost ten years ago. The exclusive report also details that Disney and Marvel are looking to “regroup” in an attempt to find a replacement for Gunn. Once a suitable replacement has been found, it is likely that news of a new production schedule will emerge.

The report also claims that Thor Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi has met with Marvel Studios regarding a secret project, but no details have emerged regarding what that could be. The idea of Waititi taking over for Gunn seems to be a natural fit, considering Thor Ragnarok’s comedic script and reliance on cosmic Marvel mythology is what helped make the third Thor film such a hit.

The stars of Guardians of the Galaxy were not keen on Disney’s decision to release James Gunn from the director’s chair. The cast got together some weeks back to provide a joint statement regarding their disappointment in the decision, and requested Disney to re-consider. This of course did not come to pass, and Disney has since held firm on their decision.  Dave Bautista has been the most vocal of the group, taking to Twitter to call out Disney for the decision. It appears that we do not have a time frame for pre-production to resume as a source told The Hollywood reporter that “The timeline has been pushed out”. For the moment, Disney looks to be taking their time in finding the right replacement for Gunn.
