Pacific Rim 2 Casts Star Wars’ John Boyega as the Lead

Ohhhhhhhhh, yes.

Pacific Rim 2 has been silent since the first announcement, but today, the lead of the film was revealed. John Boyega, best known as Finn from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will seemingly be taking over duties from Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket and Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori. (Neither actors have spoken on whether or not they’ll return.) His character’s name has yet to be revealed, but odds are he’ll be playing the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost.

“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox,” said writer Guillermo del Toro. “The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Currently, Boyega is filming for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but it’s a safe bet that once production on that wraps up, he’ll be right to work on Pacific Rim 2, which is currently slated for a 2017 release. Now, just to keep the team together, why not cast Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac?
