A mechanic as entrenched in fighting games as throwing punches, blocking is essential to surviving Mortal Kombat 11’s more intense matches. Not only does it reduce the damage you take from hits, but it can keep your opponent from getting into a rhythm and trapping you in a seamless, flowing combo.

How to Block in Mortal Kombat 11

Granted, it is possible to succeed without blocking, but trying to do so will drastically increase your chance of taking damage. Luckily, it’s easy to learn how to block and start implementing it into your strategies. All you have to do is hold down the R2 button on PlayStation 4 or the RT button on Xbox One.

When to Block in Mortal Kombat 11

To use the mechanic properly though, you’ll need to work on your timing and positioning. While blocking can absorb most attacks, it will be ineffective if it isn’t lined up with the incoming attack or put up in time to intercept it.

To avoid this, try to read when and where your opponent’s attack is coming from. If they’re sending a low attack your way, hold down on the left analog stick and hold the block button before it lands.

Likewise, if the attack is coming in high, time it so that your guard is up before the attack lands.

It can be intimidating at first, but thanks to every character having the same activation time on their block it shouldn’t take you too much time to master with some practice.
