There’s no shortage of great indies going around on the PlayStation 4 and Celeste, a game from the makers of Towerfall, is certainly one of the best games to come out on the PlayStation 4 so far in 2018.
Celeste is a punishing but supremely rewarding platformer that forces players to think a few steps ahead in planning out their movements, jumps, and dashes. Be warned, though, you’re going to die a lot throughout the campaign.
But just because it’s tough doesn’t mean it’s unfair. The platforming is very satisfying and no death feels frustratingly cheap. On the contrary, it’s a skill-based platformer in which every section feels doable as long as you’ve got the talent to pull it off. And when you do inevitably go down, Celeste has an instant respawn system that puts you straight back in the action immediately, and that makes it one of those gaming experiences that’ll have you caught in a “one more try” spiral over and over again.
Its roughly 10-hour long campaign features an engaging story that touches on tough themes like depression and anxiety and whether you’re there for the story, or the platforming, it’s among the best games released so far in 2018.
