Persona 5 Will Have Social Links, But They Won’t Be the Same

*glass shatters*

In the March 2016 issue of the Japanese Persona Magazine, Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino shared details about the new characters and dungeon changes in the game. He also spoke about the game’s social link system.

As fans of Persona 3 and 4 would know, the social links were a big part of the gameplay, and players had to bond with their friends in order to fuse better and more powerful Personas. Since the announcement of Persona 5, the development team hasn’t said too much about the social interactions in this game, and many were left unsure if the social links would even make a return with this new entry.

Thankfully, Hashino has confirmed that there will indeed be social interactions in Persona 5. However, he says that “there will be a similar system”, and that he hopes it will “go a step a higher” than what we’ve seen in Persona 4. This implies that we’ll be getting an interaction system that is likely to be different from what we’re used to.

“There will be a similar system to “Social Link.”  With the question of how to make communication for the characters of Persona 5 into a driving force, Hashino hopes to see it go a step higher in the human relation part of things than what we saw in the Social Link of Persona 3 and Persona 4.”

It’ll be a little sad to see the social link system of old pass into retirement, but I’m all for tweaks and changes if it means bringing more improvements and depth to Persona 5’s gameplay mechanics.
