What’s New in Dying Light: The Following? Everything You Need to Know

The Countryside

Dying Light placed players in the city of Harran after a deadly outbreak started turning the population into flesh-eating monsters. The city was packed tight, with tons of alleyways to lose enemies in, towering buildings, and plenty of the nooks and crannies you’d expect from an urban location. Parkour was the focus and there were plenty of things to jump on, from, and over as you raced from location to location.

The Following takes away the safety that cramped buildings can offer and throws players into a sprawling fields littered with infected and bandits. Hiding isn’t as easy as it was before, and there aren’t too many high places to escape the clutches of your foes anymore. Luckily, they’ve provided an interesting means of getting through safely to supplement your parkour skills. 

Customizable Buggies

Since you’re no longer confined to cramped streets and tight alleyways, the folks over at Techland felt it was time to throw some vehicular mayhem into the experience. Early on in the expansion you’ll be able to obtain a Buggy which you can customize with weapons, armor, upgrades, paint jobs, and even collectibles.

Just like your weapons, you’ll need to take good care of your Buggy. It runs on gas, so you’ll need to be on the lookout for fuel. Your vehicle will also take damage with parts even breaking. You’ll have to collect scrap from broken down cars and trucks to keep it running. 

New Weapons

A new area wasn’t enough for The Following. What fun would it have been to stay using the same old tools of death in the fancy new environment? The developers knew that wasn’t the way to go, so they introduced new weapons and blueprints.

You can now customize existing tools in deadlier ways, and they’ve even added the ability to freeze enemies (try smashing one after you do so). There are new ranged weapons too, including the slick Compound Crossbow. It’s just like the Bow, only with better range, more damage, and a badass look. 

Become Legend

No, Dying Light: The Following didn’t suddenly become Destiny, but it did get a brand new Legend System. This allows players who have already maxed out one of their trees to continue to earn experience in an entirely new tree to earn an additional 250 levels.

With each level comes the opportunity to add a new perk such as extra melee damage, or improved stamina, and even certain weapon proficiencies. At every 25 levels you’ll also unlock new outfits and weapons so you can further distinguish yourself among the crowd. 

A Brand New Story

Kyle Crane has left the confines of the city of Harran as the infection has claimed more lives. Antizen is running low, and hope is all but lost. But a group of mysterious people are believed to be completely immune from the virus. Whether it’s true or not is up to you to discover.

You’ll have to explore this strange new area and earn the trust of its inhabitants if you want to discover the truth. You’ll have a horde to get through before you do, though.

Dying Light: The Following is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
