This post will contain a major spoiler for Assassin’s Creed Origins that concerns a character reveal as well as the ending of the game. If you’ve yet to play for yourself and don’t want to be spoiled, turn back now.
There are a lot of moving pieces to Assassin’s Creed Origins. While Ubisoft initially said that players would be following the adventures of Bayek of Siwa, there’s actually a lot more for players to experience, which even includes another playable character in Egypt. Aya, Bayek’s wife, is also seeking justice and is helping her husband with his mission. As a close aide to Cleopatra, she has access to information and resources that make her invaluable in taking down the Order of the Ancients (an order that would eventually become the Templars). Plus, she’s no slouch when it comes to combat either, having taken out a few of the Order’s top ranking officials herself.
As players watch Bayek come to terms with the past by dealing with the threats of the present, and even witness what would become the Brotherhood of Assassin’s form, they also get to watch Aya evolve. At first she’s just killing for justice and on the same mission as her husband, but in time her way of thinking and acting on those thoughts evolves. It is Aya who suggests the rules that would live on for centuries, providing warriors of justice that kill the corrupt and operate from the shadows. Her and Bayek even part ways, realizing that they must sacrifice their love for the betterment of the world.
At the end of it all though, it is Aya who takes down the biggest marks and becomes something even bigger than she was before. Aya travels to Rome to found a Bureau of the Hidden Ones and kills Septimius and Julius Caesar. After this seemingly impossible feat, she even delivers a promise to Cleopatra, one she makes good on int he future. At the end of Assassin’s Creed Origins Aya decides to take on a new name to go with her new life. The wife of Bayek is dead, she is now Amunet, the Hidden One.
If you’re a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, especially of the first game, you most likely recognize that name. Amunet would go on to become a legend, a revered Assassin from Egypt who killed Cleopatra herself. Her tomb is explored in order to obtain her seal to unlock Altair’s armor in Assassin’s Creed II. It was her only mention in the series, and she was credited as being part of the Egyptian Brotherhood, though we now know she was a part of much more. It’s interesting to see Ubisoft revisit this character so many years later and flesh out her lore. It looks like we may end up seeing more of Amunet in the future.
