When Bastion is in Recon mode, he is more mobile and carries a fully automatic machine gun. However, when in Sentry mode, he can turn into stationary turret, dealing a high amount of damage to other plays. He also as an Ultimate ability that turns him into a small but nimble tank, able to shoot cannons powerful enough to kill Tank characters at close range.

Bastion’s moderate ability to regenerate health while in battle, coupled with his versatility, makes him an amazing pick for newer players.

Reinhardt

Reinhardt - Overwatch Tank Character

Reinhardt is a melee Tank character that enforces objectives and protects allies. His abilities, including Rocket Hammer, Charge, Firestrike and Earthshatter, also have the potential deal lethal damage to the opposition.

However, what makes Reinhardt perfect for newer players is the fact that he has a Barrier Field which can protect his entire team, as well as himself, from taking damage. You will gain experience from helping your allies, and can make a major impact on the battlefield.

Soldier 76

Soldier 76 - Overwatch offence character.

Soldier 76 is a generic but fast and nimble offense character that is best played in larger maps. Using the combination of a Heavy Pulse Rifle, Rockets, healing and a Tactical Visor, newer players will feel right at home when playing him. This is mainly because he is the character you learn to use during the tutorial.

Playing as Soldier 76 in combat usually means running around the outskirts of battle and taking down stray characters who have just respawned or who are sniping. This gives newer players a chance to get used to the controls, while not feeling overwhelmed by Tanks and defense characters on the frontlines.

Widowmaker

Widowmaker - Overwatch Defence Character

Widowmaker is a defensive sniper who can take down enemies from a distance. Playing her, you’ll most often be in an elevated position, which means you have a higher chance of taking less damage. You will also most likely to run into close combat offensive characters who actually have lower health than Widowmaker, which makes them slightly easier targets, especially if you have used your Ultimate ability to highlight them for both yourself and your teammates.

Mercy

Mercy - Overwatch Support Character.

Mercy is a top-notch support character who can offer both healing and buffing abilities to assist her teammates, which is exactly why she is useful for newer players.

When playing a character such as Mercy, you will gain some XP for buffing and healing, which does make ranking up a lot easier. You can also user her flying abilities to fly between teammates and keep yourself out of danger. The combination of Mercy, Bastion and Reinhardt can actually make the perfect defense team.

Obviously, these are just a few of the characters available, but some key ones that will help you learn the ropes of Overwatch.
