Medic – Warlock
The lack of a focused healer for Destiny has always been a mystery as the title usually pushes squad/team based gameplay for both its PvE and PvP. So with Destiny 2 on the horizon, we can only hope that Bungie will correct this and add a medic class for players to utilize. Having a super focused on either reviving fallen teammates or burst healing an entire team would be a game changer for those looking to perform in higher level activity such as raids. Grenades to be lobbed at allies to heal them or provide areas that users can stand in to regenerate their health.
Given the Warlock’s Sunsinger class already acts as a pseudo self-healing character, moving this to a full class that can resurrect teammates would be an interesting change. Not only would it nicely merge some of the previous powers from the Warlock’s other sub-classes, but allow this class to have a very different style of play then the more aggressive focused three currently released.
Pet Class – Hunter
Since the Rise of Iron debut trailer, users have been clamoring for the ability to own their own wolves and send them into battle. Given pet based heroes are rather popular in other class-based titles such as Borderlands and Diablo III, giving Hunters the ability to have their own pet fight for them could certainly add some interesting depth to the combat. Whether your animal companion would come out only during your super or having it by your side 24/7 would need to be tested for the sake of balancing, however.
Truthfully, it would be more interesting to see Bungie expand the Destiny lore and not pick an already known species on Earth like a wolf. Given we have only been shown the briefest glimpses of wildlife on planets like Venus, being able to command an alien animal would help add more flavor and depth to the world. Plus it would tie nicely with the Hunter’s animal themes and armor motifs that they typically sport
Big Guns – Titans
There a lot of weapons in Destiny, however, we don’t really have a sub-class that focuses on specific types of firearms. Given the Titan has always seemed like a class that prefers heavily artillery, so why not give benefits for using weapons like rockets, shotguns, and machine guns. This would allow for a deeper level of customization for specific items beyond the base nodes. However, a super that summons a giant chaingun or rocket launcher that can be used for a very small period of time would be quite a sight to see.
Obviously, Bungie would need to make sure that a weapon focused sub-class is balanced for PvP, as it could offer a distinct advantage to those who use it. However, this could be adjusted by the removal of melee or grenade based powers. Users could also be slightly slowed when using specific weapons that are powered up, in order to not push the power level beyond reason.
Poison – Hunter
Perhaps one of the more controversial choices would be a sub-class based around poison and infusing their weapons with damage over time effects like the Thorn hand cannon. Letting users deal most of their damage via poison could add an interesting aspect to combat, as it would turn boss battles into wars of attrition. Sure, it’d be a slower method than say using a Thunderlord, however, it would allow for unique experimentation within team compositions and solo play. Shifting to PvP, being able to block off entire areas via poison gas grenades could act as a nice area denial effect and help teams hold off objectives under sustained fire.
Now balancing this with the various sub-class powers would be rather tricky as the Thorn was a weapon that had to be nerfed due to its sheer killing power. Yet, being able to infest your enemies with a plague like toxin seems too good to be true, especially if you can customize the toxin’s effects via the various nodes.
Melee – Titan
Yes, every class already has a melee ability, however, why not create a sub-class specifically designed for this. Since we can already use a badass ax and sword, why not make this a permanent staple for a shiny new class. There’s little doubt that Bungie hasn’t had any qualms with letting players dive head first into the fray thanks to the abundance of close quarters items. Having a variety of different melee weapons could help actually define a tank role for Destiny, allowing them to draw the focus of multiple enemies at once.
Given Titans, by design, are the frontline fighters of Destiny letting them act as actual tanks in battle would be quite nice. While Destiny is always an FPS first, infusing more of the RPG roots that it draws from could help add interesting depth and complexity to its combat system. Besides, what Titan doesn’t want to just beat aliens up anyway?
Mimic – Warlock
While the actual lore behind this kind of sub-class would be iffy at best, allowing players to tap into the various powers of other races would be interesting. Bungie already teased the community thanks to the Taken armor set, so why not double down and offer an entire character based around the idea. Letting Warlocks use abilities such as Taken Captain’s blinding wave or the Vex Hobgoblin’s brief immortality could make for some interesting combinations.
Given Destiny has used the idea of “space magic” to effectively define the Warlocks as a class, it wouldn’t be exceptionally out of place to imagine they gain this kind of knowledge. Yet, it would be important to pick powers that add minor changes and not ones that could warp the entire game itself. After all, we don’t want to give a Warlock the ability to make a giant bubble shiled like Taken Vandels. However, it’s still unknown what exactly we can expect from Destiny 2 or if Bungie will even bother introducing a new class to play as. Yet, if we had any say in it adding any of these five types of Guardians would offer some fun additions to already solid gameplay.
