The Zombies Are Crazy. Like, Exploding Clown Crazy
Call of Duty’s latest Zombies mode, Zombies in Spaceland, boasts a whole lot of style. You’re going to be facing up against ’80s zombies this time around. Every single one looks fresh out of the Take On Me music video. But don’t let their fresh duds fool you, these were no joke during the CoD XP event. They started off calm enough, as the zombies mode is wont to do.
Higher up in the levels you’ll be facing up against zombies that fit the carnival theme. That’s right: exploding clowns. What’s that? You never would have guessed? Well, be glad I warned you about these. Once they start running (in a murder of explosive clowns), they’ll be aiming to get real close to blow you up. Shoot them down quickly to detonate them at a safe distance.
Challenges Are a Thing
Within the game, you’ll be treated to various challenges that you have to complete within a specific amount of time. These range in difficulty, and each one provides you with a different amount of tickets (like a carnival). You’ll have to get 10 headshots, or kill 10 zombies while midair. Or maybe you’ll have to complete harder tasks and get five multi-kills. Either way, once you complete them, a nice little robot companion gives you tickets. These can then be turned it at specific stations to buy awesome guns. Ones that are called epic things like “Armageddon.” Clearly, you and your teammates will need to keep track of the challenges as they refresh on the top left of your screens, and take advantage of the upgrades you’ll be able to buy with the ticket rewards.
Fate and Fortune Cards to Boost You Up
Fate and Fortune cards within the game will give you some added perks that will help you drive off the horde. These are cards you can build into a deck of five and take with you into the game. They’re earned either through the story progression or by completing challenges, and they can really make a difference in your playthrough. Increases to health, attack power, ammo, and a slew of others can be equipped to customize how you play through Zombies in Spaceland. These, coupled with the Candy Perks, might be best described to longtime players as the Gobblegum.
There were also souvenir coins that dropped seemingly randomly through the match. These can apparently be mixed and matched to form offensive or defensive items once more and more are collected.
Each Character Has a Unique Melee
Each of Zombies in Spaceland’s characters are unique in their characteristics and they all encompass some ’80s stereotype. There’s the jock, the rapper, the valley girl, and the nerd. They simply pump more style into the game’s art direction, each one having their own theme song and reactions. Such thought was put into these characters, in fact, that they have varying melee attacks. For example, Andre (the rapper) will deck a zombie in the face if you want him to. Just hit the melee button and pop. Then there’s Poindexter who, when prompted to melee, will give what’s more of a measly swipe at the air. He is a weak little nerd, after all. It’s just a fun little choice by the developers to make Zombies in Spaceland a whole world of its own.
Die and You Won’t Be Bored
One of the most intriguing parts of Zombies in Spaceland was dying. You’d think it would be game over and you now had to sit and watch your friends have all the fun. However, you’re simply sent to an arcade to have some classic fun on your own. As a ghost, of course.
The death waiting room is an arcade full of playable minigames. They have skee-ball, those water gun games, and even arcade machines of old Activision titles. Succeeding at these games is a way to increase your Soul Power which, in turn, is how you’ll be able to get back in the fight and join the land of the living. Fill up your meter and you’ll unlock the door to teleport back to your friends. Just be wary of the time and make sure you fill it before everyone goes down!
