Nicholas Cage can add yet another iconic role to his long list of gigs as an actor, as Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that he’ll be playing Dracula in Chris McKay’s upcoming adaptation of Renfield. This marks the actor’s first big studio movie since he starred in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence back in 2011.
Cage will play opposite Nicholas Hoult in the film, who plays the titular character, Redfield, who is the infamous henchman of Dracula. McKay will also be producing alongside Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst.
The Redfield character originated back in 1897 in Bram Stoker’s Dracula as a patient in an asylum obsessed with drinking blood. Over the years, his character has evolved considerably, with many different takes on his personality and the relationship between him and his vampiric master.
While we don’t have an exact idea of what the plot will follow for Redfield, you can at least check out a description of the character that is taken straight from Seward’s own journal in the novel, he is described thus:
“R. M. Renfield, aetat 59. Sanguine temperament, great physical strength, morbidly excitable, periods of gloom, ending in some fixed idea which I cannot make out. I presume that the sanguine temperament itself and the disturbing influence end in a mentally-accomplished finish, a possibly dangerous man, probably dangerous if unselfish. In selfish men, caution is as secure an armour for their foes as for themselves. What I think of on this point is, when self is the fixed point the centripetal force is balanced with the centrifugal. When duty, a cause, etc., is the fixed point, the latter force is paramount, and only accident or a series of accidents can balance it.”
