According to a recent report by UploadVR, Doom’s spin-off virtual reality title, appropriately named Doom VFR, is not currently compatible with Oculus Rift headsets and automatically crashes upon load.

Publisher Bethesda hasn’t detailed whether or not Doom VFR would work with Rift in the past, choosing to avoid any mention of its compatibility with the device, though it seems now that fans know for sure that the game is solely meant to be played on Sony’s PlayStation VR and HTC Vive.

Fans previously assumed that the title would be able to be played on Rift seeing as how it was released on Steam, so it seems as though this assumption may have been incorrect. This being said, the SteamVR Beta confusingly notes “added placeholder hidden area mesh for Rift users as a work around for Doom VFR and other titles experiencing launch issues,” indicating that perhaps this is a temporary bug and that Doom VFR will be available to play on the device after all.

It remains to be seen what exactly the publisher will resolve when it comes to Doom’s spin-off title. Judging from the positive reception the company and the game have been getting since Doom’s release on the Nintendo Switch, Bethesda will most assuredly solve the problem sooner rather than later.

If you have a burning desire to play Doom VFR right this instant, PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and some Lenovo Windows-based VR headsets are your best ways to go, at least at the moment.
