Pokémon is soon to enter its seventh generation with the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon in November. Prepare by testing your Pokédex knowledge in this quiz.
You will be shown Pokédex entries for creatures from any of the six previous generations, and it’s up to you to figure out which Pokémon they define.
Good Luck!
Who’s that Pokémon?
“Implements shaped like it were discovered in ancient tombs. It is unknown if they are related.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Bronzor!
Bronzor is a Steel/Psychic-type from Generation 4 that is native to the Sinnoh region.
It hangs around in tombs. Ancient people believed the markings on Bronzor’s back held mysterious power.
Who’s that Pokémon?
“According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Phantump!
Phantump is a Ghost/Grass-type from Generation 6 that is native to the Kalos Region.
One of the more creepy pieces of Poké lore, Phantump are said to come to be when spirits possess the stumps of rotting trees.
However not any old spirit will do, nuh-uh! Phantump must come from the spirit of a child who died while wandering, lost, in the woods… spooky!
Who’s that Pokémon?
“Smells incredibly foul! However, around 1 out of 1,000 people enjoy sniffing its nose-bending stink.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Gloom!
Gloom is a Grass/Poison-type from Generation 1 and is native to the Kanto Region.
Gloom’s disgusting stench can be smelled from over a mile away! If it gets agitated the stench becomes so bad it can cause you to faint.
Fun Fact: Gloom evolves from Oddish – also known, fantastically, as “Oddium Wanderus.”
Who’s that Pokémon?
“It eats anything, so it can even live in polluted streams and lakes. No one pays any attention to it.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Feebas!
Feebas is a Water-type from Generation 3 that is native to the Hoenn Region.
Poor Feebas is the ugly duckling of the Poké-verse, referred to as “a shabby and ugly Pokémon” and rarely considered useful.
However, if given enough care, Feebas can evolve in to the beautiful and powerful Milotic!
Who’s that Pokémon?
“They absorb garbage and make it part of their bodies. They shoot a poisonous liquid from their right-hand fingertips.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Garbodor!
Garbodor is a Poison-type from Generation 5 that is native to the Unova Region.
This much maligned critter had the part of the Fifth Generation’s re-imagining of Muk.
In their ire over its design, many fail to realise that Garbodor, as a sentient being born of Unova’s garbage, is a reflection of the mass of waste generated by New York – a socio-political message atypical of Pokémon.
Who’s that Pokémon?
“It has mystical powers but doesn’t recall that it has used them. That is why it always looks puzzled.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Psyduck!
Psyduck is a Water-type from Generation 1 that is native to the Kanto Region.
Its constant headaches build to the point where it must unleash them as strong Psychic attacks. This idiotic duck was introduced to the anime as a mistaken catch by Misty.
Since that day it became the primary comic relief of the show – popping out of its ball uninvited to get up to some wacky high-jinks.
Who’s that Pokémon?
“It stores berries in its shell. The berries eventually ferment to become delicious juices.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Shuckle!
Shuckle is a Bug/Rock-type from Generation 2 that is native to the Johto Region.
Shuckle is a defensive powerhouse. It stores berries in its shell that become delicious juice… but only by mixing with its body fluids…eww!
Who’s that Pokémon?
“The organ that emits its intense psychic power is sheltered by its ears to keep power from leaking out.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Espurr!
Espurr is a Psychic-type from Generation 6 that is native to the Kalos Region.
This creepy cat has a “Village of the Damned”-esque stare. It always keeps its ears closed to stop its Psychic power from leaking out.
Its evolved form, Meowstic, has different stylish appearances depending on whether it is male or female.
Who’s that Pokémon?
“It spins string not only from its rear but also from its mouth. It’s hard to tell which end is which.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Ariados!
Ariados is a Bug/Poison-type from Generation 2 that is native to the Johto Region.
Ariados spins its webbing from its mouth and butt, which has a creepy face-like pattern. It attempts to eat any prey which get caught in its webbing, sometimes even including human prey such as Dawn.
Despite its close resemblance to a spider, Ariados only has four legs.
Who’s that Pokémon?
“It carries a pendulum-like device. There once was an incident in which it took away a child it hypnotized.”
Iiiiiiiit’s… Hypno!
Hypno is a Psychic-type from Generation 1 that is native to the Kanto Region.
The award for what is possibly the creepiest ever Pokédex entry goes to Hypno. Even aside from putting people asleep and then feasting on their dreams, Hypno allegedly KIDNAPPED A CHILD! Why would it do that?!
What’s even weirder is that this Pokédex entry, which is from the game FireRed, has no relation to any of Hypno’s other entries, before or after… soooo creepy.
Scoreboard!
10 Points: Champion – The Elite Four have been conquered and the previous Champion dethroned. You sit at the top of the Pokétower… surveying all below you with haughty arrogance!
7-9 Points: Cooltrainer – Type advantages? Easy! Entry hazards? Not a problem! IVs and EVs? You’ve mastered them! You are nearly ready to face the Elite Four.
4-7 Points: Junior Trainer – You’ve mastered the basics and maybe grabbed a couple of Gym badges. Nice one!
1-3 Points: Youngster – You know your Rattata is in the top percentage of all Rattata, but not much else.
0 Points: Not a Trainer – Pokéwhat?! You haven’t even received your Starter yet. Go find your closest mad scientist and badger them into giving you a pet already!
