Single Player
One of the most notable absences back when Titanfall released on the Xbox One in 2014 was its complete lack of a single player. The game was all about the online multiplayer aspect and while it was fun, players were clamoring to take control of their Titan in some form of story experience. Titanfall 2 remedies that and brings with it a campaign that makes good use of your Titan.
Players will have to use a Pilot’s abilities like wall-running and ziplining, but you’ll also need to use your Titan to bring the pain against your enemies when needed. The campaign will tell the tale of Jack Cooper, who somehow manages to get his hands on a Vanguard-class titan when he finds himself stranded with the mech on the planet Typhoon. Titanfall 2’s single-player experience looks to be just as much about exploration and platforming as it is about shooting every enemy you see in the face. And from reviews so far, it’s a welcome addition to the game’s multiplayer.
New Maps
Respawn Entertainment hasn’t completely redesigned Titanfall 2’s multiplayer from the ground up, but simply improved it in little ways and added additional content to make for a bigger well-rounded experience. The first way they’ve managed to do this is through the inclusion of new maps. Just as you’d expect from a sequel to an online multiplayer shooter, Titanfall 2 brings with it a bunch of new maps and promises to bring even more as DLC in the future.
The three we’ve seen so far are Boomtown, Homestead, and Forwardbase. While there are plenty more included in the game, players will also be able to grab some new ones as DLC. What’s more, fans of Angel City from the first game will be able to grab this for free when it releases in December. All other post-release DLC maps will also be free of charge.
Game Modes
In order to keep things feeling a little bit different to its predecessor, Titanfall 2 brings with it a number of new game modes for players to battle it out in. While there’re a few revisions on popular game modes from the original Titanfall such as Amped Hardpoint which sees Amped Hardpoints giving double points in the standard CTF game mode, there are some brand new modes too.
Bounty Hunt will see you killing both AI and human opponents to earn points. By banking these points at designated spots on the map you’ll earn more points for your team. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the game wins. There’s also a Pilots vs. Pilots mode where no Titanfalls are allowed, and plenty more for you to refine your skills in.
New Titans
One of Titanfall’s biggest downfalls was that while the Titans were certainly cool to control, they didn’t really offer much in terms of what was different between them. Yes, one was a bit bulkier and more powerful while one was a bit quicker, but with there only being three to choose from it all got a little too stale a little too quickly. Titanfall 2 brings six new Titans to the table each with their own unique feel.
Legion wields a minigun focused on defense and control, and Ronin is the one we saw in the first trailer with the sword and is a hit-and-run specialist. Northstar can use traps, launch cluster missiles, and takeoff into the skies for aerial assaults, while Ion comes with a laser, Vortex Shield, and a powerful Laser Core blast. Finally, Scorch, as the name suggests, utilizes a thermite launcher to fire walls of thermite in the direction of enemies, and can use flammable gas canisters for explosive surprises, and Tone has tracker rockets, a Sonar Lock for detecting enemies, and a guidable salvo of rockets. With such a variation in both offensive and defensive abilities, Titanfall 2’s matches become a lot more interesting.
My Network
One of the ways some modern team-based multiplayer titles have struggled is the lack of reason for players to seek out friends. Titanfall 2’s My Network seeks to provide you with a substantial hub for all of your multiplayer needs, and gives you an incentive for playing with others. My Network allows players to chat with one another, and most importantly, form clans. While this may not sound like anything groundbreaking in the realm of multiplayer, it actually becomes a useful tool for getting your friends together.
You can designate a set time of day for an hour or two for people in your clan to get together and play. By doing so, you’ll earn double XP throughout the duration of the time you allocated. It gives players a reason to play together and form teams, rather than jumping into games alone. Hopefully, this will keep players interested in Titanfall 2’s multiplayer for a little while longer.
Pilot Weapons and Abilities
It’s not just the Titans who have got a lick of fresh paint in Titanfall 2, but Pilots have been given a number of new items and weapons to help them navigate the map and deal out some serious damage. While you’ll find all manner of new weapons to suit your playstyle, the most important additions come in the form of the grappling hook and the anti-titan weapon.
As the name suggests for the anti-titan weapon, you can deal out significantly more damage with this when you’re battling it out with a Titan than any other Pilot weapon will. As for the grappling hook, this allows you to navigate the map in a fluid and effective manner. Thanks to the fast-paced nature of Titanfall 2’s gameplay, the grappling hook is a welcome addition to the game that feels right at home when you’re zipping around the map.
