Finish The Required Mission
The most important thing you have to do before you get started on Far Harbor is complete a prerequisite mission. For those of you who have poured tons of hours into Fallout 4, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem as the mission is one that you come across pretty early on in the main quest of the game.
The quest, Getting a Clue, is one that you’ll complete with Nick Valentine at your side. With Valentine being an integral part of your adventure in Far Harbor, it makes sense that you’d have to have all other story elements finished with him before you can continue. If you’ve just picked up the game or have just hardly touched the main quest line at all, now would be a good time to start completing missions so you’re all ready for Far Harbor.
Complete All Other DLCs
Far Harbor is the third of Fallout 4’s DLC offerings and is the largest of the three. Coming before it, Automatron had us battling against, and building our own robots with a short quest line. While it didn’t take all that long to finish, it did offer some pretty sweet rewards for doing so, which could come in handy as you set foot on Far Harbor. As for Wasteland Workshop, it couldn’t be completed per sé, but it did offer plenty of new additions to the settlement building aspect of the game.
Therefore, it’s always a good idea to make sure you’re all done and dusted with previous DLC, not only so you can make use of all of those cool new weapons that you picked up, but so that you can also build a really sweet settlement should Far Harbor include a new settlement location.
Find Nick Valentine and Bring Him with You
While you’re free to take whatever companion you want with you on your adventure to Far Harbor, players who have already got their hands on the game are stating that the experience is enriched much more if you take the synth detective, Nick Valentine, along with you. This certainly makes sense, what with the DLC being about another file of his that needs investigating after all, so it’s probably a good idea to find wherever you sent him to.
According to a post on Reddit, Nick Valentine has a lot more dialog options with the new NPCs and in this new area which helps carry the plot of Far Harbor. If you’re really against having the synth by your side, then you’re free to do so, but we won’t be taking that risk.
Get the Perfect Equipment
The wasteland is a dangerous place, and Far Harbor doesn’t look like it’s going to be any different. Therefore, it’s best that you make sure now that you have the best armor and weapons available to you now. Have you picked up the incredibly useful ballistic weave mod for clothing? What about the handy Assaultron Head from the Automatron DLC?
Making sure that you have the right weaponry and clothing to suit your style of play before heading into a completely new hostile environment is pretty important. After all, you don’t know what kind of hostile enemies await in this new world, especially with new enemy types being confirmed for Far Harbor. What we do know, however, is that Far Harbor has areas with much higher levels of radiation. So you better pack some appropriate clothing. It’s better to be too prepared than proceed to get crushed because you forgot to check which weapons you’d brought along with you for the ride.
Stock Up on Supplies
Much like the previous point, you’ll probably want to make sure that you’ve also got plenty of aid, ammo, and miscellaneous supplies. Things like Stimpacks, Purified Water, and Rad-Aways should be a staple part of your inventory whenever venturing out into the dangerous wasteland. So, if you’re running low, make sure to hit up a trader before venturing out to Far Harbor. The same thing applies for ammo for all of the weapons you’re taking along with you. There’s no point wasting room in your inventory taking a weapon along with you if you don’t have the ammo for it. Stock up so you can take down anything that Far Harbor throws at you.
This may seem stupidly obvious, but if you haven’t played Fallout 4 in a while it’s pretty easy to just assume you left yourself with plenty of ammo and supplies the last time you saved, completely forgetting about that damn Deathclaw or Mirelurk Queen that wouldn’t quit just before you saved and quit out. Again, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
