3 Video Game Genres That Nintendo Should Tackle Next

Besides the Retro Studios-developed Metroid Prime series, we’ve really never seen a first-party first-person shooter come from the Big N. The announcement and release of Splatoon was commended by Nintendo fans, due to the fact that this was a new IP and a new genre from Nintendo.

Seeing another new property in a first-person shooter would be rad to see. It wouldn’t have to be a cartoony multiplayer shooter either, as Nintendo could create a mature series of characters to fill in the role. Nintendo usually doesn’t develop video games with realistic violence and/or visuals, and I for one would like to see their take on that.

Competing with Call of Duty, Battlefield, and other popular FPS games would be tough for the Japanese company to do, but if the game has that Nintendo charm still in its heart, then it could surely succeed in a crowded marketplace.

You could even throw the Mario characters into a Paintball game full of different battle arenas, weapons, and game modes –whatever it takes to see a first-person shooter.

Even the turn-based strategy RPG, Mario + Rabbids could be converted into quite the entertaining shooter. Team Rabbids and their gang of crazed bunnies versus Team Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom allies.

There are too many possibilities to think of, but I’m sure that Nintendo will realize that this genre is missing from their catalog and eventually come up with something… or they’ll just give us Metroid Prime 4 and call it a day.

Horror

Luigi's Mansion, horror games, nintendo

If you’re one of those people that count Luigi’s Mansion as a horror game, then this idea might not sit well with you. Luigi’s Mansion is and never will be, a proper horror game. You would never compare this cartoon ghostly adventure of Luigi’s to other horror series like Resident Evil and Dead Space.

That being said, a Nintendo-developed horror game would be really refreshing to see. No, we don’t need gore, blood, and people screaming bloody murder.

Instead, Nintendo could take us into a haunted amusement park with terrifying creatures scattered about or even a VR horror game using the new Labo kit.

Nintendo will more than likely cater to children in most of their video games, but having a more mature series geared towards older players would be awesome for Nintendo to do. It would awesome to see Nintendo create a new development team centered on mature titles with a deeper focus on narrative, visuals, and content.

If Tecmo Koei can get their Fatal Frame series published by Nintendo for the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U, then I don’t see why Nintendo can’t develop a new in-house horror series themselves.

Ditch Luigi and give us a true horror experience Nintendo. Okay, don’t ditch Luigi… we love him –just take him out of that dang mansion, look how scared that guy is!

Battle Royale

mario + rabbids, battle royale

I know I know –we already have plenty of battle royale-type games: Fortnite, Apex Legends, Tetris, Hunger Games — you name it. But what we don’t have is a Nintendo Battle Royale, a game that pits 100 characters throughout Nintendo’s history in a battle for the ages.

There would be dozens of characters from every franchise, and some new ones made just for the game as well. Using Fire mushrooms, blasters, explosives, grenades, and other tools at your disposal, you must defeat everyone if you want to win the prized Smash Ball… or something to that effect.

It’s just an idea, but if all of these other games can succeed at being a battle royale, then why can’t Nintendo?

They managed to create a fun, third-person, online competitive multiplayer shooter, that –after two years– is still receiving content nearly every single month. I think Nintendo can definitely recreate the success of Splatoon 2 but this time, with Battle Royale gameplay.

Heck, they could even add a Battle Royale mode to Splatoon 2 if they wanted, but I’m not sure how 100 squid kids would fit on each map… maybe just 20 then?
