10. Minecraft: Xbox One Edition
Considering its worldwide domination since it first released on PC, it’s probably quite obvious that Minecraft would appear on one of our lists eventually. With the ability to build, craft, and quite literally do whatever you want to with the world around you, Minecraft is a great game to shove on whenever you can’t decide what you really want to play.
With an average critic score of 88 based on 14 reviews, Minecraft: Xbox One Edition was praised for its increased map size, future support via updates, and retaining the incredibly compelling gameplay that everyone loves.
9. Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
Ori and the Blind Forest was already a great game, but the definitive edition refined what was already there and added more features to make it a truly unforgettable experience. Delivering a multitude of new areas, difficulty options, and gameplay upgrades, Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition is the only way you’ll want to experience one of the best indie releases on Xbox One to date.
With an average critic score of 88 based on 22 reviews, praising the Definitive Edition for making the Ori and the Blind Forest more accessible to any player, the game may be worth a try even if you’d been burned by it in the past. With a user score of 8.5 based on 58 ratings too, the sentiment toward the game from players is particularly positive, too.
8. FIFAÂ 14
An entry that may shock a lot of people in the top 10 best reviewed Xbox One games is FIFAÂ 14. Despite there having been two more recent versions release on the Xbox One since 14, it turns out that 2014’s version left the best impression at the time of its release. This may be due to the huge jump up in the game’s engine with the introduction of the ‘Ignite.’
FIFAÂ 14, like our previous two entries, also scored an average critic score of 88 based on 22 reviews. The game’s user score of 5.8 however, shows a pretty stark difference between the opinion of critics, and the average soccer fan.
7. Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition
Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is a RPG that combines deep mechanics, turn-based combat, and humor into one incredibly enjoyable package. The Enhanced Edition also brings a ton of new content, game modes, full voice overs, split-screen multiplayer, and other improvements, too. If you’ve been interested in playing through a classic RPG with friends, Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition may be what you’re looking for on Xbox One.
Divinity once again sits at 88 off seven critic reviews. Many of the reviews praise the game for its sheer amount of content, but also note its daunting difficulty. Despite the difficulty though, Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is still considered by many reviewers to be well worth the rather steep learning curve if you give it the time.
6. Fallout 4
Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG juggernaut, Fallout 4, released last year to much critical acclaim. Offering more of the excellent experience that players spent hundreds of hours playing through in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Fallout 4 was received very well by critics, and sold like hotcakes in stores.
With another average review score of 88 based on 39 reviews, Fallout 4 is praised for its huge world, endless amounts of content, and solid gameplay mechanics. Despite the performance hiccups that plagued Fallout 4 during its early stages, the game was still strong enough to pull in excellent scores.
5. Destiny: The Taken King
When Destiny first released in Sept. 2014, many players felt the game was half-baked and simply didn’t live up to the expectations that many had, especially when it came to its extremely light in-game story. That was until The Taken King showed up. Including a whole new set of missions, improving the user interface, adding in more endgame content, and a bunch of new character classes meant that Destiny became, for many, the game it always should have been.
This was reflected in the reviews for the expansion, with an average score of 89 based on 11 critic reviews. A majority of the praise for The Taken King focuses around its ability to turn Destiny into a much more comprehensive package.
4. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
Offering players the base Dark Souls II game, as well as the three DLC packs, Scholar of the First Sin is the best way to experience the second game in the challenging RPG series.
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin was praised for its crisper visuals and additional content by critics, giving it an average score of 89. The game’s user score also sits pretty at 7.6 with many users also praising the improved visuals, and the much smoother gameplay experience.
3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released in May of last year, critics were overwhelmed with the sheer size of the game. Tasked with finding Geralt’s lost daughter, Ciri, you’ll ride on horseback and sail the seas as you complete countless missions and Witcher contracts. Oh, and don’t forget about playing a couple games of Gwent, too!
The Witcher 3 has an average critic score of 91 on Xbox One based on 11 critic reviews. Despite the slight technical issues of frame rate hitches, which are much less frequent now thanks to some rather large patches, the game still remains an unforgettable experience. In this case, the user score of 9.2 was even higher than the critics. The Witcher 3 is beloved by many gamers across the world.
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
As the final game in the series, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain took the series in a whole new direction. Bringing the tactical stealth action to an open-world was an ambitious task, but one that Kojima and his team were successful in executing.
With an average score of 95 for the Xbox One version of The Phantom Pain, the game was praised for being the best-looking and best-playing game in the series.
1. Grand Theft Auto V
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is the most ambitious entry into the open-world crime-loving series to date. With one of the largest and densely populated cities as your playground, GTA V is all about the freedom to do whatever you want. With the game being re-released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Rockstar took the opportunity to upgrade the visuals, make some adjustments, and also add in the first-person view to make you feel like you’re really wandering around Los Santos.
Grand Theft Auto V received an average critic score of 97 based on 14 critic reviews, with much of the praise revolving around the improvements added in the Xbox One version. The game also has a user score of 7.9 based on 686 ratings. Sounds like there are a lot of happy Los Santos citizens to us.
