Honorable Mention: Dirt 4

Starting with a couple of honorable mentions, check out the Twinfinite’s Staff picks for our best games of June 2017 which includes of course, our Game of the Month!

Staff Writer Tom Hopkins: Dirt 4 manages what very few track based driving games do. It combines challenging yet accessible gameplay with an almost endless amount of content. Other racers suffer from repetitiveness due to the limited number of tracks and a desire to make a career mode seem more robust than it is. However, Dirt 4’s Your Stage features ensures that Codemasters’ new game never suffers from the same issue.

It allows you to build a unique course by adjusting one slider for length and another for complexity, with the game doing the rest of the work for you. Within minutes you have a brand new stage to test your skills on and add to an already impressively lengthy and diverse career mode. You can then jump online to race against other drivers on the pre-set variety of courses and you can tweak your team to ensure that your setup is the best it can be. There is an incredible amount of content to enjoy in Dirt 4.

Codemasters’ game is also beautiful to look at. From the dusty fields of rural America to the twisting ice paths in Sweden, the detail is stunning. Mud or snow builds up on the back of the car as a stage progresses, and fallen leaves flutter whenever you let the back end drift a little too far. Dirt 4 is both Codemasters best looking and deepest game to date, making a must play for any racing fan.

ARMS

Honorable Mention: ARMS

Reviews Editor Zhiqing Wan: ARMS is Nintendo’s attempt at creating a fighting game and, like most games this company produces, it’s a unique and fascinating experience unlike any other. Though the game lacks a solid single-player campaign or any sort of proper story content, ARMS is best enjoyed online, or with a few friends in local co-op and versus. The motion controls are highly responsive, and every punch has a weight to it. The game is extremely easy to pick up (but also rather hard to master), making it the perfect party game to enjoy with friends and family, or just a regular workout game you can put on for 30 minutes or so every morning.

While we’re still not quite sure if the game will enjoy a major presence in the competitive fighting game scene, ARMS is definitely a must-have title on the Switch if you’re a fan of exactly what it is: an active motion control title that’s meant to be played with a crowd.

The Best Game of June 2017: Nex Machina

Staff Writer Tom Hopkins: With Resogun and Super Stardust, Housemarque already confirmed themselves to be masters of the twin-stick shooter genre, but Nex Machina is up there with their best work. Its striking visuals bathe the screen in neon light as you battle through the chaos, destroying robots and saving humans. It uses the strengths of the developer’s prior titles to create a modern take on the bullet hell shooter of old.

The Arcade Mode is short but infinitely replayable. It sees you play through the game’s five themed worlds (each made up of 15 smaller levels), taking out robots and attempting to set the highest score you can. Saving humans and staying alive increases your multiplier and helps you set high scores and climb the leaderboards. Comparing your score with friends and others around the world prompts you to jump straight back in and try to improve.

The level design ensures that the gameplay is challenging, yet it never feels unfair. You’re given the powers to overcome the hoards and take advantage of the space in every world. The additional powers and weapons at your disposal add depth to the stellar gameplay, offering alternate ways to complete levels. The gameplay is tight, smooth, and compelling, and is among the best of Housemarque’s works.
Game of the Month

That does it for our June 2017 Game of the Month. Congratulations to Nex Machina! What do you think were the best games from last month? Let us know in the comments.
