Let’s Rank The Best New Destiny: TTK Subclasses

The Taken King brought three new subclasses but which one is the best?
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

3: Stormcaller

All three of Destiny: The Taken King’s new subclasses each have a role that they fill better than any other class. Stormcaller’s best characteristic is without a doubt its pure damage. What’s particularly great about Stormcaller’s Stormtrance super is that not only is it amazing at taking out large groups of enemies like the Striker’s Fist of Havoc or the Bladedancer’s Arc Blade, but it also has great single target damage output as well.

If Stormcaller is so great, then why is it last on our list of the best new Destiny: TTK subclasses? For starters, it faces tough competition from the other two new subclasses. While it excels in pure damage, perhaps better than ANY subclass in Destiny: TTK, it lacks some of the utility that the other two classes have. The other two classes also excel in their niche just as well as Stormcaller, but can fill other roles as well. Stormcaller is a glass cannon that relies heavily on other classes to preform its destruction safely and efficiently.

Let’s be perfectly clear though, with the right support around it, Stormcaller is perhaps the most powerful damaging dealing subclass in all of Destiny. Amplitude gives even more range to an already deadly melee. Its Storm Grenade, when used properly, can rip through targets. And Stormtrance, when paired with abilities like its own modifier Superconductor and the Nightstalker’s Shadowshot, is unrivaled when it comes to destruction.

2: Sunbreaker

The Sunbreaker subclass rides the line between the damage focused Stormcaller and the support minded Nightstalker to great effect. On the surface the Sunbreaker’s super, Hammer of Sol, is all about crowd control and clearing out groups of tightly packed enemies. It packs a punch similar to that of a Voidwalker’s Nova Bomb but can be used multiple times. Hammer of Sol can also create Sunspots that weaken enemies while buffing the Sunbreaker. Not only does that increase the damage output against crowded enemies, but those Sunspots can also cause strong damage over time on bosses as well.

That alone puts Sunbreaker above a lot of other classes, but that’s not all it has up its sleeve. Sunbreakers can also reduce enemies defenses with its melee attack, making it easier for the Sunbreaker and its allies to take down high HP enemies.

And while most people rightfully think of Hunters when they think of agile subclasses, the Sunbreaker subclass also has movement based utility as well. While using Hammer of Sol, Sunbreakers can opt to use the Suncharge ability to dash across the battlefield, vaporizing anything or anyone that gets in its way. Finally, when using Fleetfire, Sunbreakers can boost their Agility to high levels as they dispatch enemies with Hammer of Sol, making it easier to move from Sunspot to Sunspot. Combine all of that with the overshield given to Sunbreakers when using Fire Keeper and its easy to see how quickly Sunbreaker can become a force both offensively and defensively and is certainly one of the strongest TTK subclasses.

1: Nightstalker

The Hunter desperately needed something that had another use besides dealing damage, and boy did they get that. Nightstalker got more than any Hunter fan could have asked for. Its super, Shadowshot, is absolutely devastating in PvE play. Not only does it do extreme damage to an enemy, it leaves groups of enemies completely vulnerable to be destroyed by other more damage oriented classes such as the Stormcaller. When modified with Blood Bound, its a wrap for packs of even the strongest of Destiny enemies.

If that wasn’t enough, the Nightstalker gets one of the most versatile melee attacks in the game. Smoke can be modified to either turn yourself or other allies invisible, deal damage over time, or used as  proximity mine. That’s STILL not all. Shadowshot can be further enhanced to allow the Nightstalker to produce more orbs for allies or increase everyone’s Armor and Recovery who are near by. Oh, and let’s not forget that the Nightstalker has a pseudo dodge roll when equipped with Shadestep.

No other class in Destiny, new or old, has more versatility than the Nightstalker. But don’t mistake the Nightstaler for a “jack of all trades but master of none”, the Nightstalker can do so many things and do them all extremely well. Making it an obvious choice to top our list of the best new TTK subclasses.
