10 Games to Look Forward to in May 2016

Battleborn

Gearbox sets out to deliver a brand new, over-the-top, first-person experience with Battleborn. Half FPS, half MOBA, all badassery. Players will be able to choose from over two dozen unique playable characters as they fight through a story-driven campaign, or one of the many multiplayer modes.

Filled with Gearbox’s signature art-style, and wacky humor, Battleborn keeps the energy high through fast-paced battles whether you’re playing solo or with friends. It’s a solid title and a great way to kick off the month. You can get in on the action and see for yourself on May 3. 

 Superhot

Xbox One

Superhot impressed players with its very different take on the first-person shooter. Using time and movement as a mechanic to control the flow of battle, right down to the movement of bullets, made for a game that was just as much a puzzler as it was about action. PC gamers have already had some time to learn the ins and outs of this interesting indie title. Now its time for Xbox One players to see what all the fuss is about.

Use strategy and plan your every move as you fight your way through levels and teams of enemies. Every step has power, learn to watch yours on May 3.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

One of the most highly anticipated games on the PlayStation 4 is finally about to hit store shelves. Naughty Dog’s swan song for what has proven to be one of Sony’s biggest exclusives takes Nathan Drake on his final adventure. With his long-lost brother joining in for one last score and everything he holds dear hanging in the balance, Naughty Dog is providing the deepest, darkest game in the series thus far.

If you’ve followed the treasure hunting adventure this far, then you’ve undoubtedly already had this on your radar above all other games. But, if you’ve never experienced Uncharted’s brand of action, prepare yourself for an adventure with twists, turns, platforming, and a lot of shooting. Prepare to find out exactly how a thief ends on May 12. 

DOOM

The grandfather of the FPS genre returns with a ridiculously fresh coat of paint. Anyone can battle supersoldiers, aliens, and mutants, but how often do you get to take a super shotgun to a demon’s face? Yeah, not often. Doom is all about huge battles, lots of gore, and constant action, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you just want to send demons back to hell.

While the multiplayer definitely has room to improve, there is still quite a bit there to enjoy. If you’ve been looking for something different and wouldn’t mind a dash of nostaliga, May 13 has just what you need. 

Shadow of the Beast

Shadow of the Beast is a side-scrolling platformer that doubles as an action-adventure game. Take control of Aarbron as he fights to free himself from slavery and return to the life he had before. Of course, to get out from under his oppressors’ thumb, he’ll need to fight, and that’s where Shadow of the Beast shines.

Combat is brutal and gory as you string together combos to take down waves of enemies. In between fights, players will navigate several different locales as they continue on their journeys. Upgrade Aarbron with new, devastating abilities as you enjoy this remake of the 1989 classic when it hits PS4 on May 17. 

Overwatch

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Overwatch provides frantic, squad-based combat in a stylized first-person shooter environment. Players choose from a pool of unique, powerful heroes to do battle in teams of six across game modes such as Escort and Assault. With roles present in battle thanks to four distinct character types, there’s a ton of team-based gameplay, requiring communication and strategy.

With so many shooters out there focusing on the singular experience, Overwatch’s crisp presentation, accessible gameplay, and team-focused mechanics are a welcome breath of fresh-air. You can join the heroes yourself on May 24. 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan

PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC

The turtles in a half shell are back and they mean business. With PlatinumGames at the helm, Mutants in Manhattan is all about speed, huge combos, stunning team attacks, and all the laughs you’d expect from the pizza-loving band of brothers.

After many games that struggled with the very essence of TMNT, Platinum’s upcoming attempt definitely feels like they’ve figured out the secret to making taking control of these turtle siblings fun again. Each character is unique and, if playing alone, you can switch between them on the fly so that you always have the right tools for the job. Better yet is playing with up to three friends to tackle the surprising, but very welcome, challenges the game places in front of players.

Get ready to kick some butt of your own before a nice slice of pizza on May 24. 

Dead Island: Definitive Edition

Dying Light released to high praise, and for very good reason. Zombie slaying mixed with high-speed parkour made for something fresh in a genre that has been overdone to death. Techland’s previous foray into first-person zombie action, though, was Dead Island. A game very similar with a large, tropical open world, full of zombies and deadly mutations. It was a solid experience, but was plagued with bugs and visual issues on consoles. A universally panned pseudo-sequel, Dead Island: Riptide, didn’t help matters at all.

But, the game was a diamond hidden in the rough and with updated visuals and a slew of fixes, players will be able to experience an interesting take on zombie outbreaks on the current generation of consoles. Choose from one of four unique characters, each with their very own extensive skill trees and fighting styles, and fight your way to the center of the outbreak. Craft dangerous weapons, smash through hordes, and even play with friends. Face the living dead on May 31. 

The Elder Scrolls Online – Dark Brotherhood

The Dark Brotherhood descends upon Tamriel. Silent murders are being committed across the land as everyone’s favorite assassins guild moves quickly through the night. Find out if you are worthy of joining their ranks in the highly anticipated Dark Brotherhood expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online.

The expansion will include new character templates, new areas, hours of new story, an entire new skill tree, and tons of assassinations waiting to unfold. Test your mettle against the best out there and learn to become one with the shadows on May 31. Those playing on consoles will unfortunately have to wait until June 14. 

One Piece: Burning Blood

One Piece is full of powerful warriors perfect for a fighting game, and that’s exactly what Burning Blood delivers. A frantic 1-on-1 fighting game where players choose teams of three from over two dozen of the strongest and most recognizable pirates and marines from the One Piece series.

Devil Fruits will play an integral part during battle, as each unique type will not only provide powerful abilities, but will also provide the same perks they carry in the anime and manga. For instance, Logia types will be able to avoid physical damage if the player has the skill to use their abilities properly. This will make for some serious strategy during intense battles where only one can be crowned victor.
